That was sarcasim. Gues it was bad. Who really buys this game for single player though? Yes I know thats what the designers shoot for and not the competitive online aspect but come on. At least make it to where its playable, otherwise make it single player only.Foo wrote:Therein lies much of the issue, everyone expected solid multiplayer. Even moreso after D3 failed to deliver.
Why is noone playing Q4 online?

Thats youre opinion, cause me even the single player mission wasnt that good, if i compare it to a game similar FPS. I did F.E.A.R. single player like 3 times now and still enjoy it, and a older one FARCRY that i did again 3 times at least.Foo wrote:Meh, the single player was fine.
The single player mission of Quake IV was OK but nothing to make me play it again and again....i compare this game to a old one that i did only once to try it...it was call; UNREAL II (the awekening)...
Like i said a OK game, but nothing to get exited...

wrd. osp/cpma are pretty much perfection imo when it comes to comptetitive arena based play. Why go back a few hundred years trying to re-invent the wheel when you can have a solid shooter like q3?Foo wrote:There's nothing about the game that I can't get from Q3. Amen to that. I hope the number of players keep increasing. I have noticed that the outflux of servers and players when Q4 was released from Q3, has now seemed to turn around and come back in like the tides.dzjepp wrote:wrd. osp/cpma are pretty much perfection imo when it comes to comptetitive arena based play. no kiddin.D'Artagnan wrote:The game just sucks...like i have said in another post, if they wait for too long, the game will died, cause nobody will be talking about that stupid game, that is fist of all not even optimize at all...the 3D engine is the worst of all in all the industrie.
If i compare this engine to some other new game that runs much better...as a exemple take F.E.A.R. this game has great effects and run pretty smoother, also The Chronicles of RIDDICK has great light effect and run smooth.
When I.D. release the quake 3 engine it was much better, all the game that came from that engine where running fine, but that new engine just sucks.
Just check the 2 games that allready came out from that engine, you got Doom III and Quake IV, on both games you have to tweak all kind of stuff to make it work properly.
You know its not everybody that know how to change thing into the config.cfg file, normally people just do some minor change into the game menu and BINGO youre game run fine.
I always had great respect for the game that came out of I.D. engine, but this time, i don't think they got it right....
Lucky for them that in the past they made a couples of great games, cause the way it is now, nobody would take the time to even talk about it...
I waited for an update (1.2) installed it, fired up the game, it froze, Q4 is now uninstalled. Tired of waiting for patches and pissing around with cfg's trying to get this hunk of junk to run well. Not worth the hassle so it's officially on the forget-about-it list.
The only people playing MP are hardcore's who dont mind pissing with stupid files. The rest of us have moved on to games that play well through minimal in-game menu tweaks...as a game should be.
Q4 is nothing more than a lunchbag letdown supported by a few with high hopes and good intentions. The reality is...Q4 is dead and no patch is gonna fix the damage because the damage has spread beyond the game and into the community.

Looks like QuakeWars will get water:

Perhaps someone will simply do a Q3 Arena type mod for QuakeWars?

I'm also disappointed with the lack of interest in Q4, It's hard finding a server with players & a decent ping. I really hope things pick up with the 1.3 patch thats supposed to have gameplay changes & new content.
I'm in the minority in that I have a decent computer that can run Q4, but I hope id software gets better performance for mid/lower end computers gamers in the upcoming 1.3 patch.
Hopefully Q4 won't be the first Quake game that doesn't stay installed on my hard drive for years to come. All past Quake games had a nice long stay on my HD & all were great fun.
Lets hope we can get back to playing for fun & stop all the flaming & complaining that seems to have taken over anything related to Quake 4.

Although all the flaming and complaining is negative, do you honestly think its unwaranted? I know I spent $50.00 for this game and I don't think its worth $5.00 at the moment. So I don't mind pointing out all the flaws when I see them.Bugsy wrote:I'm also disappointed with the lack of interest in Q4, It's hard finding a server with players & a decent ping. Hopefully they continue to make the game better but I can't see how this game could ever do well with the history it has had. The majority of average players have allready returned the game or moved on to something else when they couldn't download a map and got disconnected from the server. That was a long period of time with the autodownload issue. Then with all the patchs on and off availability. Man it looks bleak.

Sadly, I don't think it's performance that's what is holding Q4 back. The tweaks have been firmly established from the get-go. FPS-saving maps like the ones dr4ch released came out almost immediately to help get the game playable. Not to mention the fact that it's quake, so people config-rape the game in order to get max possible fps. I think it's safe to say that MOST people run this game at 50-60 fps.
My 2 cents? For Quake 4 to work, it would have had to do a number of things differently.
1) Keep the original look and feel. Q4 is plagued with boring player models, uninspiring UT Spaceship-like slick textures, and shiny surfaces. Call it a small complaint, call it what you want, but that's UT's bag. That slick crap never was quake and never will be.
2) Bring new things to the table that q3 did not. The addition of the crouchslide was the right idea, but they stopped there. Q4 had the opportunity to revolutionize movement. It's a different engine, so why not do some different things? Instead, they decided to try and make the movement as much like q3 as possible. Well, I've got news. There's an game out there that does q3 movement the best, and it's called quake 3.
In addition, there's nothing new or inspiring about the weapons. A nerfed PG, a bugged SG, a delayed RL, and an LG without truelightning does nothing to further the game, or revolutionize the way it's played. God forbid they switch it up a little and go for something new and different. They also failed to pay attention to all of the work that was done on hitboxes by the community for q3. In fact, they basically had all of their work done for them in this area regarding size, alignment, and so forth, but they ignored it in favor of a...
3) Quick Release. This hurt q4 more than anything else about the game. What made the original quake so successful? How about Q-test! Alot of people don't know of it simply because they weren't playing quake that long ago, but what it boiled down to was a serious effort to reach out to the community and get feedback. The game was PRE-PRE-Beta stage (some of textures were missing it was so unfinished), and it allowed ID to make the changes they need before the shareware and, ultimately, the full version were relased.
The mistake of not reaching out to the community beforehand seriously hurt q4. Sadly, all of the hard work in the world by syncerror will never win back all of the players (like myself) who have uninstalled the game and moved on. IMHO, both ID and Raven tryed to play it too safe when it came to this game, and they got burned badly.

spread the word of GTR, and q4 will be played :P
baseq4 is boring, unbalanced and way too much like ut or cs, and id won't even concider to change it.
and the competition mods won't make it better either.

WHY did they not release a test? I mean come on, RtCW was due to have the worlds suckiest MP, but fuck they released a test, saw what was wrong and withen so long another was out even better than before... And then the final owned even that...
If your even half serious about making a MP game these days, a test is NEEDED. Not only does it fix your bugs and give the players what it wants, it also builds a FREE fanbase up, of players than can download the test to TRY the game, to see how well ti runs etc.
I thnak id and raven for trying to fix this, I really do, but my god half of this should of been fixed BEFORE release. In this day and age this kind of stuff is NOT acceptable.
Plus I fail to see how a game based on another game, that had a desert like planet, rusted walls everywhere, bloody grey cyborgs, lava, water and acid hazards etc, could turn into a big generic pile of bland? Dont get me wrong i like Quake 4, it was a good game. But fucking hell, when i loaded it up (after an impressive intro i have to say) the first thing i though was "fucking hell, they gave me the halo 3 cd instead?". Wheres my "Im gonna rip your momma a new one" music? Where was the explosions, the darkness, the relentless cyborgs with STYLE? Why is this enforcer in front of me suddenly BLUE and 8 foot tall...? WHY IS MY BLASTER A PISTOL?
It just lost so much flair... So much of it could of been saved by a test i'm sure. Remember the old Q1/Q2/Q3 test days? Fucking hell, so much changed... Great stuff...
Think id software. Your next game, be it something new or MY GOD another futuristic first person game, if it has even a hint of Multiplayer... Give us a damn test...

@ o'dium: Thank GOD someone agrees with me about the QTest. Q4 needed one, BADLY. And the style element too, WTF happened to the STYLE of quake?!?! Who remembers booting up Quake for the first time, and getting immediately BLASTED by a killer NIN guitar riff? It's really sad when you think about it, because what was possibly the best FPS in the history of gaming has been turned into a big steaming pile of crap.
@ Oeloe: I agree with you. Looks like no test is in sight. That's sad news because ET:QW NEEDS ONE.
