Trouble installing new hard disk

Post by LawL »

I've initialised my new HD in Disk Management but it's still not showing up in windows explorer.

While all other partitions/drives are listed as "Healthy", my new HD is listed as "Unallocated" which I'm sure is the problem, but I don't know where to go from here.

Ummm, maybe you should format it.
And if you look at the file system it's not NTFS or FAT32.

Right-clicking doesn't give me the option to format.

When you right-click on it and go to properties, what info does it give you there?

Try booting with the xp cd, and when it gives you the option to install xp, format the unnalocated drive there. Or for a sure fire way, try finding a disk drive utility boot disk from the Samsung site, it makes formating realy easy.

Or.. possibly, you could just use partition magic like most people..
[size=75][i]I once had a glass of milk.

It curdled, and then I couldn't drink it. So I mixed it with some water, and it was alright again.

I am now sick.

You can also right click on the unallocated space and then select format. I know you already got it, but I thought I would put that option out there as it is rather simple.

Why would a person feel compelled to use partition magic for something as simple as creating a volume? It can be done via the computer management snapin or via the command line using diskpart. Both are buit into the OS, both are easy to use, and both cost nothing. "Most" people don't use partition magic for something that simple.

I downloaded that this morning and just tried it out. That CD has every boot utility I've used and more. Its a goldmine.
