games you can map for?
Hey everyone....
I fell of the face of the internet about 6 months ago... but I'm back now so its all good. I spent a bunch of time catching up on video games, books, movies, home repairs, and other things. I also took a stab at c++... which I am still trying to devour. I haven't mapped, however, in about 18 months. But now that I'm back I got some good ideas about what I want to do, mapping wise.
Im thinking about mapping for something else besides q3. Can you guys name every and any game that you know of that you can modify on the computer? Im talking about ALL games here... not just FPSes. And they dont even have to be new games.... Basically any game that you can map for, list it.
That would help a bunch.
-Cheers.

black & white blanket logic
One game that has been a horrible mapping addiction for me for the last few months is Trackmania Nations. It's a racing game and a free download. The editing is tile-based, but you can really do some very creative things. You can also edit intro and replay movies and that's fun too. Another attractive feature is that you have a finished level in a few days, instead of a few weeks or months.
Free download here: click me!
There's also a thriving track base available on this site, which includes over 22,000 tracks, each complete with records, replays, and awards given.
If anyone likes it, check out my tracks. [/shameless self-pimpage]

I say grab DOSBox, run DEU on it and slap some .wads together for doom/doom][
You may want to pick your favourite unreal game and give UnrealED a shot, too. It's a pretty good editor.
I suppose you may want to have a look at Farcry, too, for a completely different take on level building (prepare some pain medicine, though).
Warcraft 2 is fun too.

Noooo don't do it, don't download this becasue you'll end up having wayyy too much fun!pjw wrote:One game that has been a horrible mapping addiction for me for the last few months is Trackmania Nations.
I grabbed this version of the game when it came out (as pjw knows) and it's actually a lot of fun to edit and create tracks for. Dead easy to pick up as well (I've got some tutes on me site covering some of the basics).
If you want a 'quick' editing fix, this can't be beat.
- Cube 2: Sauerbraten. You can edit maps in-game, even cooperatively with other people online. That's quite impressive... but the game isn't.
- Infinity Engine games (e.g. Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, Neverwinter Nights, etc). If you're learning programming and like the older IE games, then you might find GemRB interesting as well.
- Wesnoth.
Also, if you're already familiar with Q3 mapping, then you might be interested to know that Tremulous went standalone recently and Western Q3 plans to. Both could use more maps.

Nah, it's the usual 'the way it's meant to be played' guff. There are a couple of specific enhancements that only kick in for nVid cards but it runs perfectly on ATIs or any other card. It's not much of a performance hogger unless you turn the GFX right up.

Tremulous has about 7 official maps and currently 4 betas and i'm trying for my lousy alpha. Could use some nice maps.
http://tremmapping.pbwiki.com/ for the info concerning it's mapping and http://www.tremulous.net for the site.

I guess I should also do the obligatory Starforce warning here. TMN does install a version of Starforce despite the fact that it's free. Some people have had problems and issues with Starforce. TMN has never given me any sort of trouble, but ...just sayin'.
I haven't touched a level editor in the last 3 months or so. Been busy working on stuff for print in Illustrator and xhtml/css stuff for web. But I still have that game developer itch in the back of my neck that I'm just dying to scratch.
I tried playing online... I suck. Need practice. Plenty fun though, it's like one of those Hot Wheels track sets that you had when you were a kid, except in 3D and you're actually driving the car.
Someone care to start a Q3W Trackmania server?
Well, whatever it is, it's on your side. I just downloaded and installed it without any problems with [cough]Firefox[/cough].FragaGeddon wrote:Well I got it downloaded. Now it won't install without causing corruptions.FragaGeddon wrote:When I decided to try the link through IE.
Now it's frozen at 57% done.

Starforge - don't install this game if you're running games on Daemon Tools.pjw wrote:Sorry man.FragaGeddon wrote:d/l issuesHope you get it worked out.
