hey, I just got quake 3 about a week ago, and had some questions I couldn't find answered anywhere. The main problem I am having is finding populated baseq3 servers, or servers that host a mod that is similar to the regular quake 3 gameplay. I bought quake 3 to play the regular game, and a few total conversion mods. A small mod that adds admin/player features, like ETpub for enemy territory, would still be the regular gameplay, and would be acceptable for play.
I tried excessive, and I didn't like it. Everyone started out with all the weapons, and they were also edited. I had already read about excessive, and didn't think I would like it before I bought quake 3.
I also tried OSP twice, and I'm unsure about it. I looked it up, but didn't find much information on what changes it makes to the regular quake 3 gameplay. The first time i played it, the server was set up for instant gib. The second time I started out with all the weapons on the map, and the client crashed a few seconds into the game.
I like quake 3, but I can't play if I can't find servers. I'm basically asking what changes are made in each mod, and which is most suitable for me. I haven't playing online much, because I have been working on my autoexec. I learned a lot about quake 3 commands through enemy territory, even though some of it is different. I liked the game engine so much that I bought quake 3, even so late.
N00b questions about baseq3 & mods
OSP is the big enhancement mod for Q3. It doesn't change the core gameplay at all in its usual operating mode but it does add a handful of different gameplay and gametype mods which can be activated on-demand, such as Promode and Clan Arena.
Most servers running 'normal' Q3 games are running OSP, cause it's essentially what ETPub was for ET but more elaborate.
I would guess you were unfortunate in landing on the minority of servers that are running 'wierd' OSP configurations. Make sure you've got Q3 updated to the latest version (1.32/3), get a 3rd party server browser like Gamespy or ASE, and you should find the games you're looking for.

I already have gamespy, and a few other browsers, I was just not sure about OSP. The servers I was playing on were running baseQ3, which seems to be the original game. How can I tell when the server has some odd configuration, that isn't noticeable right away? Instant gib is noticeable right away, but servers with gravity settings may not be as noticeable.
I think you can usually get a readout of the server settings in OSP by inputting \callvote at the console without any parameters. It should gob out the current voted settings and general game mode.
Failing that, there's other ways, but often its easiest to build up a few favorite, trusted server and stick to them. Most of the populace is doing the same, so some servers are occupied regularly while lots lay dormant and never see much action.
