New PC need games

Post by Fury »

I haven't paid much heed to PC games since Quake 4.

Bioshock is on my to get list but what else? I like pretty much any genre barring racing/sports.
Good RPGS?
Is crysis good for something besides mega pretty benchmarking?
I'm looking for mostly single player things but decent multiplayer games are good too.

A quick search of metacritic wasn't too helpful.

Specs:
CPU: Intel Q6600 Quad core 2.4GHz
RAM: 4GB
Graphics: 8800GT 512MB
OS: Vista Ultimate 64-Bit
The dream is dead.

Crysis is a decent SP game... how much thinking you put into your tactics and trying different ways to play will determine how much you enjoy it.
Or if you're shaft... just turn on unlimited ammo and declare you played the game.

ETQW is good MP.

I haven't really played much else so those are my only recommendations.

Bioshock, Company of Heroes (plus the Opposing Fronts expansion) and Orange Box (especially Portal) are mandatory IMO.

Crysis was a competent shooter, I enjoyed it, but it wasn't "omg fantastic", but definitely worth playing.

Gears of War was a bit meh I think. I was underwelmed. No real story, repetitive combat, dull looking.

Older good games: Oblivion, Civilization IV, Supreme Commander, Dawn of War

whats the consensus on assassins creed?

portal is a must. i was a bit skeptical for the first few levels until the storyline exposed itself.

Crysis is fun but short, and criminally bad after the introduction of the third party.

Bioshock is a good game, but it didn't deserve all the 90% and above marks it got. And again, after the big reveal, it's pretty bad.

If you want a really good RPG, you can't go wrong with The Witcher, one of my favourite games of last year.
Good story, fantastic choice and consequence style play and solid character development make it very worthwhile, although some of the voice acting is cringe-worthy.

The recent community patch for Gothic 3 finally makes it playable. Granted, the combat is still junk, but the world it presents you with is one of the best realised in any genre.

Call of Cthulhu, while graphically ropey and reminiscent of Quake 2's visuals at times is one of the scariest games I've ever played. The AI's poo, animation can be laughable, but the game just drips atmosphere. It's incredibly unsettling.

Dark Messiah is a wonderful, shallow slash-em-up which reminds me a lot of Severance. While the game and story are linear, the combat allows for every encounter to feel different, even when replayed.

A few you may have played on the 360:

Call of Juarez is quite simply the best Western I've ever played. Billy's segments are shit and the character himself is a whiny little twat, but that's all made up for by Reverend Ray, the best, hardest videogame character of recent years. No-one fucks with Reverend Ray, and the gameplay in his sections reflects that. Gunning down outlaws while quoting fire and brimstone from the Bible just plain rocks. It's like playing the Saint of Killers from Preacher.

Overlord is best described as a cross between Pikmin and Fable, and is ace. I don't really have to say much more than that. The description fits it perfectly.

Condemned is another scary game well worth playing. Again, it loses its focus somewhat towards the end and regrettably dabbles in the supernatural when it would have been so much better staying grounded in the real world, but the hand-to-hand combat is so visceral and shocking it more than makes up for it. Besides which, the mannequins in Condemned make the plaster spider splicers from Bioshock's Fort Frollick look a bit silly really.

And if you've not played the Orange Box yet, put all other recommendations on the backburner and play this first.
Episode 2, while beginning to feel a little overdone, is executed well enough to keep you entertained.
Team Fortress 2 brings fun back to multiplayer, and is quite simply laugh-out-loud hilarious to play. Longevity seems to be suffering, but Valve appear to be addressing this with regular releases of new content.
And Portal is just sublime.
Yes, it's short.
Yes, it's easy.
But the gimmick just doesn't get tired.
I've replayed this game god knows how many times, and it never gets old. Besides which, it has got the best ending of any game in recent years. The only other game ending that stands out as strongly as this for me is Fallout's.

Finally, do yourself a favour and drop $10 on Audiosurf.
When you find that obscure band that you think you're the king of and some random stranger from halfway across the world starts beating your high scores, an oddly intimate and addictive kind of competition is born. Well worth the money, and as other reviewers have said, the best excuse to re-discover your MP3 collection.

I'll add NFS Pro Street, DiRT, BF2142, and TR Anniversary to that. Flatout: Head On is coming out soon.

I just recently played through Prey again. Damn I love that game.

ETQW
Bioshock
Portal
Penumbra Overture and Black Plague
Lego Star Wars II

GoW, Team Fortress, UT3 were kinda disappointing. No lasting value, get bored of them quickly.

Haven't played Crysis or CoD yet.

Currently playing the best game ever which is the new Wolfenstein which came out this week (I'm only on the second level though, but awesome so far).

it seems longer if you try and hero through on arcade mode with limited lives and a shot clock.

i went with the MSI P6N Diamond. The only nifty feature it doesn't support is DDR3 but i figure it'll be time for a new box anyway by the time it's required for decent performance.

I picked up Portal (not the whole orange box, i'm waiting for all 3 episodes of half life and i didn't dig TF2 i know i'm weird) COD4, Bioshock, Company of Heroes Gold (for the X-pack), and the Supreme Commander Expansion. I'll check out The Witcher when I finish with these guys and Audiosurf is amazing thanks for the recommendation. Man it's good to crank settings on bioshock.

Portal - totally awesome, and in response to the comment that it's fairly easy: some of the early custom maps are apparently very hard indeed so worth looking out for. Ep2 is good too

UT3 - this actually grew on me. at first i thought Warfare had totally mangled the utterly excellent Onslaught gametype but it's actually quite fun, though the game cries out for some good custom content as the vanilla maps are a bit hit and miss. oh, and the Necris vehicles are great

CoD4 - great storytelling, and you never run out of ammo or idiots to shoot at. looks pretty good too for something done in a heavily modified Q3 engine

Crysis - i loved this up to the point where you enter the mine, at which point i think the developers went out to lunch and left the rest of the game in hands of a crack team of complete gaylords

Bioshock - apparently awesome but i stopped playing after a few levels and haven't gone back

MoH: Airborne - short, and brings nothing new whatsoever to either the FPS or WW2 genre, but shooting nazis never gets old, and the open-plan maps allows some replayability

AoE3: Warchiefs - great fun (so long as you don't play as the redskins, who suck), and the battles are a pretty vivid sound and vision experience. haven't tried the Asian Dynasties add-on yet though

the only future games that have grabbed my attention are HL2:Ep3, Rage and Farcry 2
