Router or modem died??
Router or modem died??
Here is my problem. I have a Motorola cable modem and a Linksys router (wireless G 2.4 ghz). The wireless stopped working recently so my wireless is off a neighbors router. The wiring is:
Cable to modem
Modem to router
Router to PC
This is standard and worked for a long time. If I cut out the router and just run the cable to modem to PC all is well but I have no wireless.
I was told not to assume that the problem is with the router - that sometimes the cable modem has a problem and will not "see" the router, and it gets no signal.
Does anyone have a way to be certain that either the modem or router is gone? The modem is a 5 year old Motorola Sufrboard and the router is a 3 year old Linksys.

Re: Router or modem died??
Can you still ping your router from your computer? Ping your modem? Also to try pinging an external website like google or something.
Let us know if you get a response in the 3 cases above.

Re: Router or modem died??
running the pc directly to the modem bypassing your router cuts your wireless that you had with your neighbor? wtf? are you SURE your wireless is hosed on the linksys?
doing what you did should have zero effect on your wireless connection.

sounds like you need to upgrade your firmware, big boy.Peenyuh wrote:My router does that to me sometimes. I just reset it and its fine fer another few weeks. Also a linksys...6 mos old.

I hate asking alotta questions, cause it shows how ignorant I am, but...what is "firmware"? Will it keep my router from disconnecting every once in a while?

Re: Router or modem died??
It might. Firmware is the software that makes your router tick. Don't confuse it with Windows drivers or some such, it runs on the router itself.

Thanks for the reply. I plan on trying to fix and tonight and I will let you know what happens.
Re: Router or modem died??
It wasn't freakin me out or nothing. I think Earthlink's suppose to take care of that sorta thing. I thought it might be something on my pc. If it's the router software itself, I believe it's taken care of by the provider. I asked them about the occasional disconnecting. They said there was nothing wrong. Lotta people tell me they have probs with their Linksys routers. Manufacturing prob, I think.+JuggerNaut+ wrote:if yer skurred, list the model and version # plz, kthx.Peenyuh wrote:I hate asking alotta questions, cause it shows how ignorant I am, but...what is "firmware"? for consumer grade routers, they're one of the best. i'm not wrong, sorry you disagree.
Re: Router or modem died??
Well - here is the fix. Linksys has live chat support for all users. Here are the instruction for a 54g router:
♠Locate the reset button on the back panel of the router. Reset the router. To reset: Press and hold the reset button. Unplug and replug the power; while still holding down the reset button. Release the reset button. This should be done 15 seconds at most.
♠You may then proceed by following the next steps below:
1. Disconnect modem from the Linksys router and connect the PC to port 3 of the router then restart it. (This PC should be the one that can get online if directly connected to the modem).
2. Launch a browser and in its address bar, type in, http://192.168.1.1 and then hit enter.
3. Skip user name and type admin (admin is the default password), and click OK.
4. When the router's page shows up. Click on the the MAC Address Clone sub tab and click on "Clone your PC's MAC" then save the settings.
5. Click on Security tab. Uncheck the box labeled with Block Anonymous Internet Requests, save the settings.
6. Click on Wireless tab, change linksys to any word you like and change the channel to 11 and then hit on Save Settings.
7. Unplug and replug the router's power for about 20 seconds and shut down everything for a minute.
8. Connect cable from the modem to the Internet port of the router and the computers to the numbered ports of the router.
9. Power on. (Starting from the modem then the router and lastly your PC).

Re: Router or modem died??
Linksys makes various revisions of their routers, some are better than others since in their production time they have changed chipsets, memory, etc. so there is some variance between quality. But that's the same for most consumer routers. Overall, I'd say that the far majority of the products that Linksys makes are still above their competitors.
I have a Linksys WRT54GL router and I flashed it with the DD-WRT firmware. I also own a half dozen linksys wireless cards and other hardware. Not a problem on a single one.

Re: Router or modem died??
And the only thing that process accomplishes is making your modem "see" the MAC of your PC.
Which, by the way, could be accomplished by unplugging power from the modem and plugging the PC NIC into the modem, then powering on. Cable modems generally get the MAC of the device plugged into them during the startup process, and pass it along to the ISP for addressing.
More than likely all you needed to do the whole time was unplug power from the router and modem, plug the network cable from router to modem, power on the router, power on the modem, and then go.
Remember this process anytime you're changing what's plugging into your cable modem... the device needs to be on first, then the modem powered on, so that the modem can obtain the device's MAC.
