fun with cel

Post by fKd »

well i've started a new map, "fun with cel" as you can tell from the title its using the cel shader effect from q3map2. its a box map (figured i'd make 1)
using as few textures as possible. screenshots and alpha to follow tomorrow.

its nothing serious.. just an investigation into the cel shader effect.. so far its quite interesting :)

anyone know of a good map using this effect?

ok heres a new version, almost done yay!
*no clipping has been done yet
*item layout is ok imo but im no pro
*this version is using a samplesize of 4, so it might run slow for some of you

feedback would be great, thanks for ya time :)

I haven't tested its gameplay but from a visual perspective it looks nice. I can't say it's a performance hero. Here is a shot taken on a E8200, overclocked 9600GT and 2 gigabytes of ram installed machine:

Image

1280*1024*32 resolution and AF is 16x. Considering the machine, not a much config for Quake 3.

Your ink shader is missing inside the pk3. That causes missing texture effect as seen in the shot above. Adding textures/cel/ink path and installing into the pk3 fixes it. It's better to use a unique shader path like textures/dmp6/ink.

I don't know if this was your visual style choice but I didn't like the way teleporter looks with cel shaded. It's just my opinion ;):

Yeah it's after installing shader. Since the parameters are my own, it may not act as the original. It's just there to show how it looks like.

Good looking map, waiting for the clipped version. ;)

i've been looking for a good teleport model, but cant find 1 anywhere. i might just build 1 in editor.

i need to fix the cel shader, oops lol cheers for seeing that. as for the performace, i think its coz i built the whole map
with a bsp samplesize of 4, as apposed to q3's normal 32 heheh it was nice having sharper shadows, but in the end the boost of system needed to run it is not worth it imo. might go with 16 tho. when rendered normal it runs at a far better frame rate. cheers for the feedback :)

No, q3's normal is 64.

Default is 16, atleast in q3map2...
And I tried the level too and had the same problem, the FPS was, well, not well and also the missing texture, coulden't really play on it.

I got this error in my console. It looks like there's an error with a glass texture aswell as the celshading texture.

I liked that first map someone linked to. I've recently switched to a high visibility config and it's nice to find that celshading can offer detail without the expense of visibility. It looked like the screenshot on LvL without changing my config back. I'm looking forward to some decent maps with celshading that have decent FPS.
