My documentary again.

Post by redfella »

Hey guys,

I'm back again with my documentary idea about level designers. I put together a tiny website in support of this project. http://www.theleveldesigners.com

I'm trying to figure out if I can make a go of this project. A major challenge I have at the moment is finding good stories to tell. I believe that the world of level design and all that entails is quite fascinating, but perhaps I am just a bit biased. I personally haven't mapped in over 3 years, but I still find this topic compelling and I think others (laymen) would too. I just have to discover some good and worthwhile stories to tell.

If any level designer out there (hobbyist or professional) believes that have a story worth telling, please give me shout.

Thanks!

have you spoken to ydnar at all?

because it'd need to appeal to non-mappers, can imagine that the documentary would need to tell a story of sorts - and that it'd need to describe some of the world beyond mapping (e.g. competitive play and modding) and some of the world within mapping (e.g. speed mapping, bert peers (?) shader editor). the obvious candidate for a story is the history of mapping from things like doom to the latest id, valve and unreal tech - stopping along the way at major technological and artistic innovations and ideally citing the influences of independent mappers/developers on mainstream games.

in the garden on a sunny afternoon and this is the tweed talking, but some ideas for a film about level design could be threaded with ydnar's (and any other significant contributions towards) development of q3map or getting hold of the authors of landmark maps outside of quake, like whoever made that de_dust thing for counterstrike.

I think a discussion about open source software, community involvement and collaborative works would do well in a documentary about the modding community. If you look at many of the tools used by our (Quake3 based) community, you'll find that a large portion of all the tools and documentation are open source and community driven. So it would be interesting to learn exactly why people feel compelled to contribute to projects that someone else may be working on a world away and how this differs from the commercial scene.

Thanks for the ideas guys.

Reading your posts fired off some synapses upstairs and helped me think of some things in a broader context about this documentary and it's overarching theme. I appreciate that more than you'd realize, so thanks.

Well, time to get cracking.

Good on ya for the documentary but (as I mentioned in an earlier thread about this topic) it's still not clear to me what the focus of your documentary will be: amateur "mappers" or professional level designers.

You mentioned in your earlier thread that the documentary would focus on "mappers" and try to find out what motivates people to take it up...but after reading the "about the film" page on your website it appears you've broadened the scope to look at professional level designers and what they deal with doing their job and how they became "masters". Yet here (again) you appear to be focusing on amateur "mappers".

I'm just not sure if I should bother submitting any stories (pro) since I'm (still) not sure if it's what you're looking for in terms of content.

...or maybe I missed something.
