i have some thoughts about the draw:

- Charlize Theron was really awkward at the draw.

- I'm very glad that US will be playing England (and in the first game, and on Saturday right after the tourney begins). People keep talking about the US's recent matches in the confederations cup, but I think people should think more about Italy v. US back in 2006. US plays the best when they go balls to the wall--this is what they did in 2002. This is what the US does best...and it's the reason they failed in 2006 (because they took it too slow and casual against Czech Republic). If England want to win, they need to think about how to control the ball, maximize possession, and slow down the tempo of the game.

- Also, I think people are rushing a bit to judgment. If the last tournament taught us anything, it's this--there are no weak teams! Well, New Zealand may be weak, but everyone fights hard. I remember reading before 2006 WC that T&T and Togo were jokes, but they were extremely difficult teams to beat--and both teams were very skilled. Yes, all the big teams advanced, but still...no easy victories. I imagine the same will be shown in this tournament.

- I find Group A to be the most interesting and most unpredictable. I don't know why more people in the press aren't commentating on it. Does the group have the best teams? No, but any combination of two teams wouldn't be a shock.

- I think Brazil will comfortably win their group. Portugal still has no superstar, genuine striker. I think itll be Brazil and Ivory Coast.

- Argentina needs a superstar striker and someone who is strong and physical up front to play against Nigeria and Greece. Batistuta and Crespo are the kinds of players I'm talking about. Aguero, Messi, and Tevez are very good, but they are physically out matched by Nigeria and Greece. I think they will advance from the first stage, but it will be difficult.

there's loads of weak teams, because there are weak regions

ffs saudi arabia were there in 2006, and the piss-poorest german side in living memory caned them 8-0. there are always weak sides in the finals

that was in 2002, not 2006. i think we can all agree that 2002 was weird. but i still see what you're saying: let me broaden my point--its that 2006 showed that every team can hold their own. i just dont think it will be surprising if one of the teams that seems to be written off makes it out of their group. every game will be a battle.

I accidentally saw a bit of the draw ceremony when i was suddenly struck by the similarities between it and other ´international´ tv things such as the song festival or CNN. It's like there's a correlation between the amount of viewers and the degree of stupid... or maybe there are just some influential people in the teevee business that get a kick out of dumbing things down to new levels of spectacular comatose idiocy. Who knows.

I was thinking the exact same thing as I was watching it. It was like seeing the Eurovision song festival or the MTV awards, but even sadder yet.
The Dutchies have an interesting group though.
