Hey guys, I've just made up my mind to go back to playing Q3:Arena as I used to love the ass of it, and some frag movies have got me raring to go. However, after looking at the odd topic on here I'm serious wondering whether it's worth it. Do people still play this game? I know a few years back OSP was a lot more popular than the original game, but do people still play OSP, or even the original?

Some people still play, but not a whole lot as far as I know. If you're just looking for a regular game of Quake 3, do as Dark Metal said and go to http://www.quakelive.com
Here you can sign up and play Quake 3 for free after installing a plugin for your web browser. The website is set up and maintained by id Software (creators of the original Quake 3) and they still bring out updates very frequently. They've added a lot of cool stuff to it like persistant statistics, a great match making system, unlockable achievements (a la XBox Live/PSN/Steam) and more. So unless you have a real reason to stick to Quake III Arena, I suggest you try Quake Live as it's way more popular right now.

I've played Quake Live and I don't like it in all honesty, the maps, extra weapons and the like aren't to my liking.

I also like the old-feel to the Q3:Arena game itself.

in quake live ( without paying for premium ) you get the same basic maps as in Q3 and no extra weapons.

Don't the non-premium/pro accounts have access to a handful of Team Arena maps as well? I remember playing Scornforge and Inner Sanctum without premium account.

Similar? Q:Live is completely different.

One minute i'm getting blown up randomly by Prox Mines which have been scattered everywhere, then I'm picking up 'Guard' which does fuck all, THEN i'm rolling into fuckers covered in a pink orb which I can't hurt - all before I get blown off a map i've never seen before.

I've played around 15 games and only played on 3 of the old Q3 maps. Q:Live is not only different, but it's wank too. Not impressed.

The stuff you're talking about is Quake III Team Arena content, which was an expansion pack for Quake 3 released somewhere in 2000 I think. All of these features are only available on the three or four CTF levels they've taken from Team Arena to feature in Quake Live. All the other maps are vanilla Quake 3.

Also, it sounds like you just don't know how the Team Arena powerups work. The Guard, Scout, Double and Ammo Regen powerups add a lot of strategy to CTF games and while the Invulnerability powerup is a bit gimmicky indeed and prox mines can be annoying, the Team Arena maps are pretty damn spectacular if you ask me.

If you want vanilla Quake 3, stick to FFA, TDM, 1v1 or Clan Arena or customize the "play online" view to only display Quake III Arena maps. It's possible.
