Re: *nerd rage
When a trailer dedicates 1/3rd of the video to the exploration/interaction/rpg-style gameplay elements, then it's obviously an important part of the game. I don't need to play it to know how they're trying to market it sir.
You're making statements like "This game is exactly what it's supposed to be" when the trailer says otherwise. If it was a straight up shooter, it'd be compared to other games like Quake, COD, Halo, etc... but when it starts introducing features like hub exploration, interacting with citizens and having a level up system, then it's going to be compared with Borderlands, Fallout, Stalker, Bioshock etc.. and next to these games, it seems really limited to me. I assure you, these comparisons will be made come review time and people will judge it against them and not just id's own back catalogue.
That's just the way the industry works. Comparing individual game merits with other reference points in the genre. In this respect (and this is my own personal viewpoint as you say) then it doesn't look to deliver, at least for me. As odium says, it could have been so much more.

Loved the Quayola pick-up, "64 shades of brown!"
But the DOOM reference fell flat because the artwork on the box .
It is really cool when they re-use sound effects though. The key card in D3 played the original key card sound effect from 93 when you picked it up. Good fan service.

jeez that looks boring as hell.
frantic in your face gameplay? the highest number of enemies at once in that vid was.. two. and they both were killed by pivoting in the same spot and hitting them with the quintessential shotgunblast. playermovement looks to be about half a mile an hour.
i'll wait for SS3 for the frantic in your face gameplay tyvm

You make the most unbelievably cunty posts regarding computer games. You haven't got the first fucking clue what it's "supposed" to be, because you have the same communication lines with id software as I do. i.e. None. Every scrap of information you have regarding this game is internet-based, and accessible by anyone else.Eraser wrote:And that's where you're wrong. This game is exactly what it's supposed to be, no more, no less. It certainly isn't encumbered by RPG nonsense, and that was a good choice IMO.o'dium wrote:Its not boring as such, I find with each movie they release it looks a little more entertaining and I want it a little more.
The problem isn't what it is, more what it COULD have been, if only they didn't stick too much to the age old formula. It really is screaming for some more open world-ness and RPGish elements.
The fact that it has Bethesda behind it, famed and notable makers of RPG-based FPS games suggests that your supposition is probably wrong. I've read on more than one notable site that it will have "extensive RPG elements".
So what the hell are you talking about?
Re: *nerd rage
Bethesda came into the picture what, three years into development? Four? That probably suggests very little as far as what RPG elements are in the game.
The elements that we know about (and considering how late we are in the development cycle, this probably is all there is) include an inventory system, looting dead enemies, weapon customization, and a quest system. Unfortunately (imo) there's no leveling system, no experience points, and no actual gear upgrades (i.e. rare items, etc). There are also no character classes or talent trees, etc.
I will most definitely be playing this game but I fear that after having played Borderlands it's going to feel like everything else id has made since roughly q2.
If that's the case, I am afraid it's going to be a pretty big disappointment in the gameplay factor. How could they have withstood all of the criticism from d3's vanilla gameplay, spent six years on a game, and made the only functional gameplay changes an inventory system (which is more of a burden than a "feature," for any genre, let alone FPS) and driving?

As Mogul said, Bethesda acquired id Software only recently at a point when Rage was already nearing completion. Also, id Software has pretty much full creative freedom without any influence from Bethesda. Carmack said this himself. Of course one can doubt how much of this is true, considering it's all still a commercial undertaking, but I don't believe for a second that Bethesda requires id Software to create an RPG game.
Instead, I base my ideas on what id Software has done like... forever. Create games where the fun is in the gunplay, not in RPG elements or complex storylines. Therefore, it's no big leap of judgment to assume that this game will be about the same thing: shooting stuff with guns that go BOOM. The wish for RPG elements is, IMO, quite an odd one, because everyone knows what id Software has been about ever since they created Wolf3D in 1991.
Re: *nerd rage
Fucking bullshit, just found out there are no professions. Was looking forward to making an Alchemist/Herbalist

Re: *nerd rage
There is a crafting system of some kind, but they may just be referencing the weapon customization.
And I personally want RPG elements because for one, I'm a sucker for carrot-on-a-stick character stat progression, and because even though a part of me loves the id gameplay style all the way up to DOOM 3, for a single-player game, it just isn't very interesting to me anymore.

Re: *nerd rage
I just wanted a way to upgrade your character, possibly the same way you do with the vehicles and weapons.
Just a way to customise how you look, maybe different armour types, boots etc that change how heavy you are and things. Instead, they jsut give you the same old "can take 100 bullets to the face" guy we have had in every game since.
RPG elements doesn't mean "make it fallout", but just opening it up a bit more than what the yare used to wouldn't be an issue.
Plus we all know the reason its not open world is because its split over two disks on 360, so you cant go anywhere/do anything so easily...

Re: *nerd rage
Well... there is at least some kind of customization as far as your look. The only reason I know this is because if you pre-order (which I did), you get a new model or skin for your character. It's purely aesthetic though, and since MP in this game is driving, it is an SP-only skin, I suppose.

Re: *nerd rage
MP isn't just driving, theres coop play as well for special coop missions.
Re: *nerd rage
Oh right, I guess I was just thinking deathmatch. I actually really look forward to the co-op because they're levels designed from the ground up for that style of play, and they reinforce the game's story and setting by taking place "behind the scenes" in the game world. Very cool idea.

Re: *nerd rage
Every time I see that amazing Tech 5 engine, I just wish it was the new Elder Scrolls that was using it. Christ, that would be the best game ever.

a lot of games with coop work this way.

top off my head, the last three Splinter Cells, No-one Lives Forever 2, Dungeon Siege, Portal2.Mogul wrote:I don't play very many co-op games. Which ones do that?
as I said, loads of games do that.. its prolly easier than adding co-op support to the single player campaign.
Re: *nerd rage
Ah right, I had actually heard Portal 2 used that approach. It sounds like such a good way to implement co-op, and not have it feel "tagged on." Has it worked well in some of those games?
