I was amazed to find out just how widespread the use of epidurals is for childbirths in the USA - compared to here in the UK where natural births are really encouraged.

Is the whole medicated experience something to do with USA health insurance (as in, I'm paying for it so i'll bloody well have it thankyouvermuch)?

The guideline on epidural has just been relaxed in the UK now. It can be requested at any point.

edit: personally I'm not keen on the idea at all
