Well?

I answer with "Hello Mum", as I who's calling (if I really know), usually by their title/name I suppose, most of the time; but you have got to be careful.

Like "Hello George, it has been too long.. You looking for me as your hit man again?" and the Police are calling you, just making enquiries :olo:

I have nearly come unstuck at work a few times recently where Mary has called and bloody Ralph is sitting there waiting for me to tell all :smirk: and I have been pretty lucky as not to give itmuch away like "Great night, lovely lingerie, I am doing you again soon... "

Yes, but when some picks up the phone and says hello, it usually sounds like "Hello?". As if the recipient didn't know who's calling...

Here in Holland it'd customary to answer with (literally translated) "with [your name]". But if I got a caller ID of someone I know I usually answer with something like "hi" or "hey" or whatever.

xer0s should just use :dork: as a signature so we don't have to reply to his posts with one.

what's an "outdated generic response" anyway?

is Tsackbackncrackali trying to say he's more advanced than the rest of us?

It's a legitimate question, though. What is an "outdated generic response" when people sometimes answer the phone by simply grunting or asking "What?" or "Yeah?".

And how exactly does a greeting become outdated? Do they remove it from the dictionary?

It's only outdated if Tsuckdiki doesn't hear it on Jersey Shore anymore.

People say "Hello?" because that's what their parents said. Their parents answered the phone that way because they had no idea who was on the line. It simply became what you say when you answer the phone. It doesn't make it "outdated". it's just the norm.

But I voted "depends on the caller".

My good friends, "What up".
My parents or elders, "Hello".
Unknown number, "This is xer0s".

Great poll...

I already gave an example.. "hello?"

"what?" is not in the same category as"hello?" You're seriously trying to tell me that you used to answer unknown calls with "what?" lol dude.

"hello?" is an example of an outdated call response. "hello?" was used as an inquiry to who it is that just called you...even though you damn well know who it is. I'm sure dif. people from diff. cultures had their own responses that are now equally pointless.

Why do YOU think people answered with "hello?"

Another example is what eraser mentioned , which might have made sense pre- cellphones since, it is possible that the caller didn't know who would actually answer the phone...but now that response seems kinda pointless when calling someone's personal cell don't you think? If you want to be a fag about it, in the case eraser brought up, one would have to also mention that this call is to a cellphone...then it would make his customary response seem outdated.

I can understand your displeasure with this thread being that you had to google 'caller ID' and 'cellphone' :olo:

An outdated generic response would "Ahoy-hoy", which Bell envisioned to be the correct way to answer a telephone.

Friends and family I greet by name since I know who's calling. I use my cell for work, though, so when I get a call from an unknown number (possible client), I answer with "this is Eric," so they can get straight to what they want to say. If it's non-business hours, I answer with "go for Eric!" just to see what they'll say.

Another thought for you to ponder.

Many years ago I worked for this nations telephone company, so many years ago in fact, we used to call Customers Subscribers and yes I was a young technician so picture me fixing one of these plug & cord telephone switchboards.

Hang on, that's too much detail & too big... Click if you want to see of course but see below.

Image

In those days people were asked to answer with their own number, ie "9568" :smirk:

There was a reason for this apparent madness; on some public telephones* (some call 'em Payphones) you actually had to roll the coin to the left so it would drop down into the mechanism (trip contacts) to make the connection.

* Appreciate private "land line" telephone services were expensive then.

Searches..... Gawd :tear:

Image

There was another model where you had to press an A button (the phone would take you money and connect your call). B would refund your coin.

A picture found :paranoid:
Image

If the called party answered with the wrong telephone number* you had a chance to opt out and not be charged, perhaps loosing you last threepence coin :smirk:
*technology has improved remarkably. Dials used to send impulses to the exchange (make and break 10 times in a second, nowadays they send tones)

Those were the days. Matter of fact tomorrow I am attending the telecom museum with an old workmate from the 70's

Here's an interesting site http://www.worldpayphones.com/
