Calling all PC hardware wonks
Re: Calling all PC hardware wonks
A quick glance tells me £1320 for 4 of those GTX670s.
That's more than many a PC costs, just for the graphics. I thought, what I saw before, £1000 for a sort of double-graphics-card-in-one-thing was a lot... I suppose it still is, though.
Edit: Now I know what all that power is getting used for: Multi-monitor set-ups.

Re: Calling all PC hardware wonks
They're EVGA GTX 670 4GB SC, I paid $2100 CAD after tax. I wouldn't get them if I didn't need them, though. I'm hoping to be able to run most games at 60+ fps at 7680x1440 (8064x1440 bezel corrected).DTS wrote:A quick glance tells me £1320 for 4 of those GTX670s.

Re: Calling all PC hardware wonks
4 Gb? That's £1520, then. Seems expensive... but that (7680x1440) is a nice high resolution. Aren't those higher resolution monitors some of the most expensive, too? *whistle*
Idk if I'll ever run a 3-monitor set-up. I played a Ferrari arcade driving sim before that used 3 monitors, that was good, but I'm more interested in a 21:9 screen, hope they make a monitor like that; they've only made TVs that wouldn't take PC input at that ratio and some phones that also wouldn't display anything at the native res except the phone's interface.

The screens cost me $2,500 CAD. I played some Dirt 3 on three screens and then played it on one screen. You really can't compare, it's two different worlds.DTS wrote:4 Gb? That's £1520, then. The latest and greatest Intel cpu series. It's called Ivybridge which supercedes their still very popular Sandybridge line.
SandyBridge - i5 2500K, i7 2600K, i7 2700K
Ivybridge - i5 3570K, i7 3770k
By all accounts, Ivybridge runs hotter than Sandybridge, but improves on it with a few better features. Such as a more powerful onboard graphics chip built into the cpu.
Apparently the Ivybridge onboard graphics processor alone can run crysis on fairly high.
You'll be fine with either Sandybridge or Ivybridge, just get whichever is cheaper. Make sure it has 'K' at the end of the number, they're the overclockable ones.
You won't need an i7 if it's mostly for gaming. You'll be fine with either i5 2500k or i5 3570K.

Re: Calling all PC hardware wonks
IB only runs hotter because Intel put a TIM between the die and the IHS instead of fluxless solder like they did on SB. I replaced it on mine with Noctua NT-H1. At first my temps dropped by 10C, but the NT-H1 couldn't handle being between the die and the IHS and the next day my temps soared 10C higher than stock. I put some Arctic Silver 5 for now, hoping that it will be more stable. I'm going to try some Arctic MX-4 when I receive it, and then move on to Liquid Ultra if that doesn't work out. I just don't want to deal with all the difficulties of liquid metal just yet.DRuM wrote:By all accounts, Ivybridge runs hotter than SandybridgeNightshade wrote:

BTW, I made a step-by-step and took some pics of the process. You can read it here .

Re: Calling all PC hardware wonks
Why don't you make an iphone their PC like you've done for yourself?
Thick, solid and tight in all the right places.

Lol here's the deal...I fixed it by disabling cool and quiet in bios... Another spot on PC built by your god GEOFF...u mad?...
Re: Calling all PC hardware wonks
can you repeat that? I couldn't hear your over the sound of your god awful cpu fan.
Re: Calling all PC hardware wonks
This is rumoured to be because of substandard thermal paste between the die and the integrated heat spreader on early Ivy Bridge parts.By all accounts, Ivybridge runs hotter than Sandybridge
Some places have gotten positive results from removing that and redoing the paste under there with something worthwhile.
Haven't done that myself yet (obviously disclaimers against stupid people trying it if they care about warranties and pussy stuff like that), but I've not yet gotten around to pushing the speeds up yet.
Re: Calling all PC hardware wonks
Intel releases their processors on what they call a "tick-tock" release schedule - "tick" for a significant architecture change, followed by a "tock" of a die-shrink. Ivybridge represents a "tick" release so it's expected to see a little higher heat issues until the following die-shrink. Really though, probably not much of an issue if you run a few degrees hotter. Just get a decent HSF and do some dusting every now and then.

Re: Calling all PC hardware wonks
It's the other way around. Tick is a die shrink and Ivy Bridge is a tick.obsidian wrote:Intel releases their processors on what they call a "tick-tock" release schedule - "tick" for a significant architecture change, followed by a "tock" of a die-shrink. mine does the same. sometimes it will be fine for days, sometimes it restarts 3 times in 3 hours.
