Brits: (prepaid) mobile internet in england

Post by chopov »

First posting in months...
From january on I'll be working for (estimated) 6 months in england (Crewe, iirc thats just down the road from Doombrain :smirk: ).
So for private use I need a telephone and internet connection. I'm thinking about buying a prepaid SIM with internet flat and connecting the laptop via w-lan to the mobile. I've only heard from a provider "THREE" (?) charging 15quid/month for unlimited data traffic and telephoning. Does anyone have experience with this tarif? Slow as hell or okay? I'm not planning to download Gigs of data. Its more intended for surfing/maybe some video skyping with the gf/staying in touch with the pals/checking mails, nothing too special.
It should be something like prepaid to stay flexible if I had to go back earlier or extend my stay but with unlimited data volume. 3 Gigs are used up just too quickly nowadays. Ideal case: prepaid, cheap rates for international calls to central europe and unlimited internet flatrate...
Any recommendations?

The only recommendation I can make is: don't go to England.

3 is the only service provider to avoid at all costs. There is a reason why their deals are always the cheapest > doesn't fucking work.

It seems as if someone is trying to make it harder to follow their trail. If the Queen or PM is assassinated within the next 6 months or so, we'll know who-done-it.

Doombrain is just down the road, so sounds like a solid bet. :olo:

Seriously, should be alright if you are just using it for web browsing. Don't even think about it for gaming and you may even have some annoying latency for Skype. I've never been to England so I don't know how affordable their mobile plans are, certainly better than Canada though.

what pink said - make sure you do get your internet sorted, you're going to be staying in a lot :)

as long as you're near a town centre, there isn't much difference between the major network providers in terms of service (although i've never heard anything good about t-mobile, ever) - so it might be best to just sort it out when you get there and can compare local deals. you'll find carphone warehouse at one of the retail parks and all the other major suppliers in the town centre (next to the pound shops, betting shops, pawnbrokers and vacant properties). don't talk to anyone, think innsmouth but with fake tans instead of gills. very occasionally (read the small print and do the math), supermarkets will have better PAYG deals than the phone-specific stores.

most contracts over here are for at least 18 months and hard to get out of, so you're right to stick to PAYG. PAYG USB 3G dongles are a fairly popular way to get online and they're usually bundled with a simcard/handset. don't know about gaming, but i skype with someone fairly regularly who uses a 3G dongle and can't remember them ever lagging significantly.

crewe :olo: on the plus side, that's one of the few places in ingerland that *isn't* just up the road from doombrain. it's still a shithole though. think dusseldorf, but with a sense of humour

to answer your question: you won't get a great tariff for just 6 months. might just have to bite the bullet and PAYG through the ARSE

Iirc Doombrain lives in Stoke (?) and that IS up the road from Crewe.
I know Crewe isn't exactly London or Paris. :olo: But come on it's just half a year and the job is interesting: designing luxury cars. During the week I'll be working quite a lot, so no need to go out a lot and on the weekends London is just 2h away...

My gaming times are long gone. As I've been told the downside of the dongles is, that you usually only can use deals with limited traffic (expensive) and no mobile phone deals with unlimited traffic.

Nice, I saw a program recently touring the different parts of the factory and how they assemble the cars. That's a fucking nice setup.

GiffGaff

No contract (even on the GoodyBags) and runs on the O2 network (their parent company owns O2 infact).

They don't allow tethering on the unlimited internet packages (you're fine to on the £10/month goodybag with 1GB data) so if you need more than 1GB/month you'd have to get another SIM and buy one of their gigabags for £5 or whatever.
