yeah, not so much. imdb says it had a $25M budget and made $28.3M in the US, $58.5 worldwide. Mission Impossible (1996), for comparison, cost $80M and grossed $180M USA/$457M world.

7/10

The Host = 2/10 - lol I guarantee you'll hate it by the 8 minute mark. If this movie cost $40 million then I'd guess they spent it all on the release party as this is easily one of the cheapest, most cynical feeling movies to come out in a while. I can tolerate a shitty film but nothing but horrible execution in nearly every craft is on display in this POS. Horrible dialogue yacked out by a horrible lead actress certainly goes a long way to making this film so rancid. Thank god for downloading shit for free cause this movie only deserves the money of stupid 14 year old girls...which means it'll make huge bank anyways...and at least 5 sequels.

Oblivion = 8/10 - A very well put together film. Good acting, good pace of story, it's not cheesy and stupid and, overall, it's terrific sci-fi. Definitely worth a watch.

But yeah, "from the author of The Twilight Saga".
Why do you even bother with this crapola?

lol I didn't know that. Now it all makes perfect sense.

I saw the trailer with the sound off once and thought it looked like it would be as cool sci-fi as Oblivion or Elysium (sorta the same production design...sorta) but it was horrible, just horrible. At least I could jump through the scenes I knew would suck.

Thanks for the Oblivion heads up, btw.
Devoutly hating Tom Cruise I would have steered clear of this one, but I hope to be pleasantly surprised.

it starts off well, but loses steam. It's not bad, just not revolutionary or particularly unique.

Pretty much...it's just so much better than alot of sci-fi that's come out recently so that's why I enjoyed it so much. And it's a good warm up for Elysium.

Which, from the trailers, I expect to be Matt Damon all hopped up on biomechs taking down an Ayn Randish Earth orbiting Utopia for some reason?
Seriously don't know what to make of it.

apparently the director and this guy have strong connections that go back years in the industry, way before D9. Not sure about the director but this guy is actually from south africa. D9 was apparently "labor of love" for lack of a better word and it really showed. Hopefully, they get engrossed in this new project as much as they did for D9.

I watched an interview of the two on youtube. The director seems like a very competent guy in his opinions of what makes a good movie and seems to be a genuinely hard core fan of science fiction.

Silly to expect something out of actors.
Look at writers and directors.

Oblivion - 7/10

It wasn't bad... I don't like Tom Cruise but I got over it. The machines were cool and the drones are awesome cuddly little balls of death and destruction.

Movie, overall, quickly lost steam and felt like they were rushing to explain why shit was going down and how it got resolved. Probably could have benefited from being two movies so it could have some time to build up to the end rather than just being like 'heres how life is now, oh btw heres the bad guy, the end.'

Did say I wouldn't see it again but I got the collectors edition (3D) DVD and watched it in 3D on my new 60" 3D TV :p

Funny the 3D seemed to make it look better than I remembered. I can watch near 7 hours of extras :smirk: but especially looking forward to the alternate beginning & endings.

not necessarily .. especially when it comes to huge actors that are in a position to have first pick on their choices on roles. Matt Damon for example isn't known to sell out.. he usually seems to cherry pick.. so having the D9 team behind this is good enough.. but having cherry picking Matt jumping in this particular wagon is prolly bonus reason for this potentially being good.

The Hobbit - 9/10

An awesome adventure flick. Don't really think this one needs much explanation.

Zero Dark Thirty - 8/10

A very suspenseful and insightful look into the quest to kill bin Laden. Essentially, this is 12 years worth of intelligence work, neutered and reduced to the most important/exciting bits, then dramatized for the screen. Take it for what it's worth.

Sightseers 7/10
Black comedy about a couple on a roadtrip who unintentionally kill a dude, then get the taste for it and decide to keep killing, which serves as a sort of twisted reinforcement of their relationship. Extremely British. Quite liked it (cheers phant)

Black Sheep ?/10
Something about sheep in new zealand going nuts and eating people. Was reccomended to me by a coworker but it felt extremely dated and i could not get into it unfortunately... didn't finish watching.

American Mary 6/10
A med student in financial trouble starts working on the black market as a street docter for some shady characters. Horrible things of course then happen.
Overall it's amusing and it has a few really good scenes, but jesus, i felt like i was watching some creepy dude's erotic deathporn fantasy at times. This is a weird one, i'm not sure what to make of it.

Glad you liked sightseers.

Shame you didn't get into Black Sheep, I've not seen it since release but I really liked it. some of the sheep were actually quite scary iirc. Maybe not now though. Isn't there some hole filled with genetic malfomalities that someone falls in? it gets a bit stupid after that. I can't really remember.

I hated American Mary. I thought it was shit and it felt like it had been written by some extreme body modification idiot with an over inflated ego and very little talent for story writing or imagination.

I also watched 'John Dies at the end' on Ryoki's personal recommendation. I enjoyed it but it wasn't anything super special :paranoid: It gave off the vibe of being an extended pilot episode for something.. A similar film is Cabin in the Woods, has you seen that? it knows its genre and sends it up, but at the same time it does a pretty good job of being a decent film.

Ah, maybe i should give Black Sheep another chance then, to be fair when i tried to watch it i was tired and irritable, might have had something to do with it.

And yeah, i really don't know with American Mary. They made some terrible plot decisions that made absolutely no sense and required tremendous suspension of disbelief. Only giving it 6/10 because of the few scenes i felt were genuinly good and creepy, like the doll lady and the switching of arms on the twins. The whole body modification angle was shit i thought, would have been better to just show her torturing criminals and that slowly getting out of hand or something.

As for John Dies at the End, you are correct sir. I rewatched it and i couldn't remember why exactly i thought it was so awesome the first time i saw it :smirk: Still a more than enjoyable film though - and it's indeed quite a bit like Cabin in the Woods style wise.

Black Sheep's very much a throwback to what Peter Jackson was doing before he became obsessed with shortarses wandering around picturesque New Zealand.
It's got a lot of that Eighties Schlock Horror vibe.

the lords of salem - 3 maybe 4/10

sort of a remake of rosemary's baby, on par with zombie's remake of halloween - by which i mean that the first third is brilliant and then it nosedives into nonsense and tedium. thought his wife was great in 1000 corpses and the devil's rejects, but she doesn't have much to do here - ken foree doesn't have anything to do at all. there's a point in the story where they could've just said the baddies were demon worshippers (even satan worshippers) and it would've worked, but they start banging on about jebus. spoiler: jebus doesn't show up and save the day.

if you're christian or susceptible to that sort of thing then this is probably quite a decent slow-burning horror movie, if you're not then prepare to be bored.

Redlettermedia liked it a lot, it looked so visually rich in the shots I saw that I was thinking of watching it

If you like that sort of thing then it's definitely worth a look and would warrant a higher score, it's still a Rob Zombie movie after all. I just get bored and shut down when things get religious, and it didn't have quite enough atmosphere to hold my attention beyond that. If it's any indication, I fell asleep watching the exorcist.

For a similar sort of grimey/eighties look/feel/mood, there's a guy called Ti West: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1488800 - haven't really liked any of his stuff so far (again, personal taste), but if he ever gets a story that matches up to his visuals and scene-setting then it'll be awesome.

Forgot, - The Last Stand - 1/10
Arnie's godawful return to Hollywood, surprised he didn't pick something better. Not many jokes and way too much violence/gore for the otherwise kid-friendly story.
