Xbox thread
Re: Xbox thread
Well, at least they listen to and act on criticism.
Still, a lot of goodwill toward them down the drain.
It's just like politics I suppose; announce draconian measures to test the water, and then when there's a massive backlash compromise to show how reasonable you are.

Re: Xbox thread
This is great. But the PS4 is still more powerful (no?) and $100 cheaper.
Was there ever a statement as to why they made all the ridiculous restrictions in the first place?

Re: Xbox thread
Of course, but they can't just tell us straight up they're doing it for the money. Surely they tried to make it sound like it was for our own good...?
Re: Xbox thread
It's not a disgusting crippling sadistic fascistoid moneygrabbing measure, it's a feature!

Re: Xbox thread
To move the industry away from discs and towards digital distribution. It was also supposed to save the consumer money since the publishers wouldn't have to compensate for trade or rentals.
There was some post where a secret MS employee tried to rationalize it all.

Re: Xbox thread
Didn't we do that, like 6 years ago?bitWISE wrote:To move the industry away from discs and towards digital distribution
I haven't bought any physical media since 2007.
Re: Xbox thread
So they want to be the Steam of consoles? Got it...
Re: Xbox thread
For the PC, with Steam, digital distribution is a way of old already. With consoles, not so much. I bet 99.9% of sales are still disc based, mostly because the only digital download option you have for the Xbox 360 is through Games on Demand, where they have a limited library of games on offer (mostly games that are at least a few months old) and they're all priced $60.Plan B wrote:Didn't we do that, like 6 years ago?bitWISE wrote:To move the industry away from discs and towards digital distribution

Re: Xbox thread
Plus you can fill your hard drive up pretty quick on a console...
Re: Xbox thread
Yeah, guess you're right. Haven't touched my xbox ever since it decided to RROD on me.
But surely digital distribution is the only way to go for the next xbox and ps.
They feature 500 gb+ drives. That would allow you to store at least 50 games before you have to clear out your junk.

Re: Xbox thread
I doubt new games are going to be under 10GB apiece.

Re: Xbox thread
State of Decay is an XBLA download only game that just released. It broke the original game sales record by posting 500,000 purchases in just the first week. So there is definitely solid demand for downloaded games on the console but AAA titles just don't release that way.Eraser wrote:For the PC, with Steam, digital distribution is a way of old already. Re: Xbox thread
A good point actually. Ps3 has had mandatory installs since launch, and im not sure about the ps4. Pretty sure itll require installs as well tho. I think it has to do with tje bandwidth between bluray to ram vs hdd to ram.Transient wrote:I doubt new games are going to be under 10GB apiece.
Still typical that ms is getting bashed for mandatory installs on the One even though Sony has done this for years.

Re: Xbox thread
MS is rightly bashed for it, and so is Sony. Mandatory installs on a console, especially taking as long as they do (I've heard 10 mo.Ute installs is not uncommon?) is just bullcrap.MKJ wrote:

Re: Xbox thread
MKJ, can you clarify what you mean by mandatory installs on the PS3? Some games might require you to do this, but it's not true for all games. Is that what you mean, that it's mandatory for some games?
I don't really have a problem with this, as it may be necessary for a smoother game experience rather than loading from a spinning disc.

Re: Xbox thread
I've seen a few games install some data but not all. MGS 4 was the worst.
Ps3 updates on the other hand... Now those were unbearable.

Re: Xbox thread
My life is a lie! I always thought games had to be installed in order to play. Never heard otherwise either. In fact, a friend of mine switched from ps3 to 360 a ywar ago and he was pleasantly surprised that he could just pop in a game and play on 360
Well then. That changes things.

I don't think you will find many people at the moment. I know quite a few people who are going PS4 though...
Re: Xbox thread

Re: Xbox thread
Is there? I wouldn't have expected that in fairness - kind of shocked me. I would have expected a small surge given the back tracking on Microsoft's part, but all the negative press around it before would have drawn me into saying the PS4 would have been miles ahead. Especially with stats like this being bounded around;
