Zen by Despair (MSG Comp entry)

Post by Despair »

Hey everyone. This is my entry for this year's MSG comp. I meant to post a beta weeks ago, but my motivation to map was kinda low this time around, and I just never got around to it. Hopefully that doesn't hinder me too much :). Anyway, it's a CTF map for Quakelive, with a theme of a zen garden on a mountain. I'm mostly looking for feedback on items/spawns layout and/or any errors I might have missed, but i'm still open to any feedback. There's only two days left to the deadline, so any major changes likely wouldn't be possible, but I'd still like to hear any suggestions. I still have to add clipping, a level shot, and *hopefully* bot support. Other than that i think the map is done, save maybe some lighting tweaks here and there. R_speeds could use some improving as well, but i doubt i'll have time to revisit that. So if anyone is willing, i'd appreciate it. Thanks! :)

Here's a few screenshots

And the DL link: Zen.pk3

Note: For anyone unfamiliar with loading custom QL maps, place the pk3 in quakelive/baseq3 with the other map pk3's, set the pk3 to 'read only' so QL doesn't delete it. Then start a practice game on a CTF map. Once in game, in console, type /map zen.

(Haven't played it yet, judging from screenshots) IMO, I would be a little more subtle with the painted wood colour. It looks fine elsewhere, but it doesn't look like painted wood. It's a little too true blue/red, try altering the colour a bit and maybe weathering it a bit, something like this perhaps:

Actually the colored parts are a stone texture. I had tried a worn painted wood like you suggested earlier on, but it didn't quite get the look i was after. I realize the colors are pretty bold, but that's actually common in japanese gardens. Here's one of the pics i used as reference to give a better idea.

Thanks for the feedback tho :)

Nice looking map there :)

I've not really had the chance to check it out fully, especially as it seems huge.
I think I only explored the red side, but I was still amazed how much you've gotten
done in the alotted time, good job. I couldn't make sense of the layout though,
I probably needed more time.

Also, maybe it's my settings, but everything seems overly bright to me :/

Anyway, I know time is tight now, but here are some suggestions and bugs I've
discovered.

Thanks alot akm. Can always trust you to find every little thing :D. I've fixed everything you mentioned, except adding depth to those walls. I agree with you there, but i won't have the time to redo all of that. They are structural walls so it'd be a fair bit more involved than just a little tweak. And a few ppl have mentioned that the map is too bright, so it's not just your settings. I'm going to try to tone all the lights down. All that is left to do is to hack in bot support. My maps always make BSPC cry lol... Thanks again
