So I am looking at getting a new, cheapish rig to see me through the next few years. Gone are the days where I need to have the latest and greatest in my machine, so I will have a modest budget of roughly £350.

So far, the best I have been able to source that will "future proof" me for a few years and be able to run most things at 1920*1080 is as follows;

AMD Piledriver FX-8 8350 4ghz
ASRock 990FX Extreme 3
16GB GeIL EVO Potenza Black DDR3 PC3-19200 2400MHz CL11 Dual Channel kit (2x 8GB)

I already have a 650watt power supply that is solid and a 470GTX (Which maybe upgraded to a 750ti if I am feeling flush)

Anyone else care to add anything else into the mix?

Going from a GTX470 to a 750ti isn't really worth it. The gains will be minimal at best.

My upgrade path went 470 -> 580 -> 770. Keep the 470 until you want to spend up for a higher end card down the road.

Honestly I would look at getting quad channel ram and spend a bit more for 32gb, gskill is a decent brand. Also the new cards use about 250w, so your ps should be fine as long as you don't do any o/c'ing

Just seen the quad channel prices - fuck that noise - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showprodu ... subcat=817

That's the cheapest stuff there

well, unless you plan on overclocking 1866mhz ram is useless to you, You should only need 1600mhz

Also, don't let them fool you into thinking you cannot buy 2 - Dual channel kits for use as quad channel. Maybe just buy dual channel ( 2x8gb ) like u planned and then down the road buy another dual channel, as long as everything is matched, your mobo will recognize it

edit: 750 ti is essentially the same as gtx 470 with 1/3 the power requirements

if money is of concern, the 750ti is good $180, or get the 660ti boost $200

Like I said, gone are the days when I need a ninja machine - I just need something that'll play a few games I have ordered smoothly.

The while reason for the upgrade is because of Watch Dogs....memory hungry mofo that it is

I'm still rocking a GTX 480. Like nothing seems to make it really make it cry. Id keep the 470 personally. At least til we see something that really pushes beyond 1080p.

On a CPU related note the AMD FX 8350 is a beast

Unless it's a PS3 port meaning a library computer will be able to run it on medium.

Then you're not pushing it at all. My 470 was OCed to match a 480 and it wasn't good enough for GTA 4 + enb and Skyrim running over 100 graphics mods and hi-res texture packs. It'll also struggle with high PhysX settings in Batman and Mirror's Edge.

I agree, I had sli GTX 580s and they struggled in a few of today's games at max settings

Yeah I dont run MODZZZZ in most the games I play. So Stock on GTA4 cranked out runs smooth as could be. Skyrim for as little as I put into it seemed ok. I did run some high texture pack bullshit but again I never had massive frame drops and shit. As far as PhysX shit. Yeah I dont typically crank that up. So that could be it. :paranoid:

indeed, that system is to focused on the ram and cpu more than anything.

The issue that i have with AMD systems currently is they try to hype up the 8 and 9 thousand series as top dog, but they get trumped by intel i5s... So they seem cheap, but really they're priced spot on for their performance...

if i was recommending a build for you, this is the route i would take:

Intel i5 4670K
Asus Z87-A
8-16GB Gskill 1600mhz
Nvidia Gtx 760 or Amd R9 280X
550/650watt seasonic/pc power and cooling powersupply
Samsung 840 Evo 128gb
some storage drive
pick a case that suites what you're after ( corsair 200r maybe? )

That would be a decent gaming rig that could see a good 3 years of heavy gaming without really hitting a wall...
its up to you... but to me, i tend to look a little into the future rather than the price tag.

this machine that I'm on right now is similar, and it plays whatever you toss at it with little to no problems..
intel i7 4770K ( currently at 4.6ghz w/Hyper 212 cooler )
Asus Maximus VI Hero
16GB G-skill Ripgaw X 1866mhz
Asus GTX 680 DirectCU TOP
Samsung 840 Evo 128gb
320gb WD Caviar ( an oldie )
750 watt Corsair HX series 80+ gold
Coolermaster HAF 912 case

let me know if you'd like for me to run some benches on it to get a feel for what it would do, the performance would be similar in most things between the spec'd machine and mine.
it may take me a bit of time to run em as well, this is not my main rig and I'm not usually on it..

good luck with your choice man! I'm sure you'll enjoy whatever rig you decide on.

My solid state drive and 480 GTX would be going straight in there, so no issues with that

Amidy - I am now lazy and don't have the time to dedicate to building a system so I will look to buy off the shelf and modify

AMD Piledriver FX-8 9590 Black (5ghz)
TeamGroup Vulcan RED 16GB (2x8GB)
Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0
Swift 750W V2 silent power supply
EVGA GeForce GTX 970 Superclock

Should run my games tidily...:paranoid:

I upgraded to 2x MSI GTX 770 4GB cards and it killed my performance in Adobe CS6. Thankfully CC 2014 is making proper use of SLI.

Actually I didn't really notice much difference in the games I was playing. I know it's a good machine, but I dont know how good.

Mazda - quality score! I'll see if I can't get closer to you once I've played with over clocking

You'll see some decent gains from your 970 but I've never been a fan of the EVGA reference coolers and you might have to watch out for overheating. After the EVGA 580 I had, I'll always stick with MSI's Twin Frozr
