UBB rally went great. NDP's Peggy Nash and Jack Layton came out, as well as Liberal MP Dan McTeague. The CRTC decision has been overruled for now, so Canada's internet lives to fight another day.

I was talking about the video link in my post. NDP paid for the stage, but it was a non-partisan event.

Wut? Where are you getting this? From what i've been reading, they've delayed implementation for 60 days to give time for further review. There's nothing about overruling it unless you've heard something new.
How was the turnout at the rally? From the photos it looks like a whole 6 people. It also looks like you photobombed Olivia Chow.

"for now"
And yes, I'm well aware there's a 60 day review in progress, but for now Teksavvy has lifted the UBB crap off their website and things are looking slightly better. Quite honestly we were expecting about 2000 people, but Facebook RSVPs are never an accurate measure for mass gathering. We got about 400 people, which is still good considering it was on short notice and in the middle of a weekday. Most importantly, we got the political parties involved and a decent amount of media coverage.
Now it's just a matter of getting the Canadian public to stop being such ignorant hypocrites and we'll have an even bigger national rally on the 26th.

Bell is Canada's nationwide telephone company. Rogers and Shaw are cable companies, Rogers does business in Eastern Canada, Shaw is in Western Canada. Because each of these companies built up the infrastructure in Canada, they basically have a duopoly on telecommunications. To prevent monopolizing the market, the government and CRTC (Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission) mandated that both Rogers and Bell be forced to wholesale part of their business to third party companies like Cogeco, TekSavvy, etc. However, the larger telecoms still own something like 90% of the market for broadband and television cable and satellite - some people are even surprised to learn that there are alternatives to broadband other than Bell/Rogers.
The CRTC is supposed to monitor the telecoms and do what is best for the interest of Canadian consumers, but it seems as if the CRTC is being lobbied as they will often side with the telecoms at the expense to the consumer. The CRTC is also staffed by a bunch of old farts from the 1930's, and while they may understand a bit about radio and television, it doesn't seem like they really understand how Internet works and how data is distributed. So instead of doing research and getting third party experts involved, it seems as if they are just asking the telecoms to fill them in.
So it's the CRTC accepting the telecom's recommendation to impose UBB on everyone that is causing the issue. Third party companies like Teksavvy can't do much since they don't actually own any of the infrastructure and are entirely dependent on the larger telecoms and CRTC to conduct their business. All they can do is provide the service and support for their customers, and plead with the CRTC to prevent the larger telecoms from fucking them in the ass. And that is why we have a broken system with little competition, outdated infrastructure and high prices.
There is further news lately about the CRTC and some ruling against Wind mobile that may again threaten their ability do conduct business in Canada.

I heard that somebody went to the CRTC about Wind mobile (whose parent company is a Greek telecommunications firm) seeking clarity on how much local ownership, etc. is actually required for them to be legit. The CRTC just went ahead and shafted Wind mobile, which is after the government waded in last year or whatever to approve Wind mobile on the Canadian market place.
Not sure why this is all such a big deal. Wind is cheap as fuck but it has very localized reception areas. Seems like a fair trade to me. Pay $10/month, you don't get reception everywhere, or get raped at $80/month and half your calls and texts drop out, but apparently that's called nation-wide service. Fuck this place.
Can we just oust the fucking CRTC already?
