My opinion overall is that President's, Prime Ministers, etc should never be doing interviews. Ever. The first reason is because it turns (and has turned) politicians into celebrities, instead of civil servants. For that single reason alone it derails any substantive debate about policy and instead people start asking him what his favorite colour is, etc. The second reason is because I'd rather the cunts fixed things they were elected to do, instead of spending tons of cash on PR and public perception bullshit to make them more popular...and then fund-raising to feed the PR beast.

But we both know that's boring television.

ET has ALWAYS BEEN the press. They're the perfect example of what "the press" has been for centuries. I don't know if you're familiar with the history of news reporting, but it never had its roots in rational inquiry...it was gossip and nothing more. Always has been, probably since before the Ancient Pharaohs.

I keep hearing people say "I wish journalism would return to the good ol' days of reporting" and that's just the funniest thing, because there never were any "good ol' days". There are spurts of good journalism and investigation, but that's a drop in the vast ocean of tabloid shit.

back when david cameron was running for leader of the conservatives, he and his main rival were asked on some radio show what kind of underwear they wore (boxers or briefs). a tabloid newspaper (probably the Sun) then used photoshop to illustrate what they might look like wearing their respective choices, and put it on the front page
