War of the Worlds 7/10 - excellent special fx, and well done as you'd expect from spielberg, but too many cliches for a higher opinion. the whole lousy-dad-and-husband-whose-wife-left-him-for-a-richer-man-but-who-proves-himself-in-the-end-and-wins-back-the-respect-of-his-kids routine is pretty old

I just wish that George Lucas would have stayed the fuck away from the scriptwriting and the directing of episode 1-3. Sure, he could have written the story, and perhaps produced it, but why the fuck didn't he hire a decent script writer and a good director instead of completely fucking the entire franchise right in the ass by directing it himself?

There are a few nuggets in there that does feel like the "old" star wars I know and love, and I see that the intentions are there for it to be a great story, but the execution totally ruins the entire experience. It's a pity all that potential is ruined by Lucas taking on a job he can't handle.

I watched Jarhead last night and I found it to be an excellent film, albleit not quite true to the book. I did think that Jamie Foxx's character was a weak stereotype, but I blame that more on the director than Foxx.

The entire movie was a weak stereotype.

Full Metal Jacket bootcamp scene? check.
Apocalypse Now screening? check.
Shower scene? check.
Bunch of macho BS? check.
Guy making friends with a corpse, again like FMJ? check.
Any real plot? Nope.

I appreciate that the film successfully conveyed Swofford's impressions of armed service, but that doesn't make it worthy of being a two hour movie.

A bunch of combat scenes wouldn't have made it any better, for me it just didn't have anything about it that really seemed to entitle it to its film adaption. (Haven't read the book, btw.)

edit: and I feel almost like Sam Mendes' direction is devolving. American Beauty was everything a good movie should be, Road to Perdition had the same lovely direction but less plot, and now Jarhead was pretty lacking in both departments. MEndes seems to be lost without real buildings -- that or his DP had Downs.

Brothers Grimm: 6/10. Better than I thought it was going to be and pretty funny, but not a classic by any stretch of the imagination.

D.E.B.S: 7/10 Hot lesbian spygirl falls for hot lesbian super villian. I usually don't go for 'cute' movies, but this one sucked me (literally) in.

Perhaps what you're missing here is that movies about Marines' experiences are going to have commonalities. No plot? The whole point of the movie was simply to relate Swofford's experience. It was the plot.
I did find myself thinking that if you hadn't been in the service, and specifically in the Corps, there would be elements of the film that just wouldn't matter.
Do yourself a favor and read the book. It was far better than the movie, and there were some important items that were left out. Swofford does a brilliant job of explaining the futility and insanity of his life in the Corps, and I'll admit that the film did not do this justice. I've seen better movies, and I'm certainly biased, but I liked it.

Sin City - 7/10 Visually stunning, fantastic style

Boondock Saints; 7/10

I accidentally watched most of Dogma on the telly the other day. I confused it for a jay & silent bob movie at first, but soon i was slapped about with christian stuff like there was no tomorrow. It wasn't the good kind of christian slapping either, no, they shamefully backed away from ridiculing the entire religion like they should have and made the entire thing a boring 'honest' spirituality vs blind catholic fundamentalism freakshow.

Dissapointing.

agreed! I saw it this weekend for the first time. What a fantastic movie, very gripping and actually pretty shocking too. They should show this movie in highschool, everyone will be instantly cured of any interest in drugs whatsoever.

Darren Aronofsky will be directing an episode of Lost this season.
