I just put vista home premium on a dell optiplex for someone. I cant get the thing to play an mp3. Plays 10 seconds, then stops for 2, through the whole song.
This is an unprotected file that plays just fine on my install of vista. It will play the cd fine...but even if I use wmp11 to rip that song from the cd...it wont play it in mp3/wma etc from the harddrive. I see this "Media Foundation Protected Pipeline EXE" eating up cpu time.
The file plays find in winamp..but that doesnt do alot of good if you want to use media center.

Ok, I've been running Vista at home for a couple of days now and I have to say that I really like it. Initially, there was a brief period of disorientation, but after a day or so I started really finding my way around the interface and I have to say that I find that it works very well.

It's even at the point at where when I came to work this morning and logged into XP it felt like a disappointment - XP looks so old and dated now, almost primitive in a way.

When it comes to performance I have to say that the people who whine about Vista being sluggish and slow are either full of shit or need to upgrade their hardware badly. It runs really snappy and smooth for me, and I get the feeling that applications are generally both launched and closed more quickly on Vista than on XP. That's probably due to that new smart caching, but either way it works great. And I'm not even using ReadyBoost.

Oh, and those who claim that Vista "looks just like OSX" are retards who have probably never used OSX, or even seen it in action. They look nothing alike. I can't really say which looks "better" - OSX has a cleaner, more stylish look while Vista is a bit more snazzy with the special effects, but in the end I'd say it's down to personal preference. Personally I'd say that I actually like both.

A thing that hit me was how Vista just "worked" straight after installing. No messing around with drivers and stuff, everything was automativally installed and was ready to use within a couple of minutes. Granted, I don't have a lot of legacy hardware (or software), but if you're into that kind of stuff, chances are that Vista isn't really intended for you in the first place.

All in all I have to say it has so far been a pleasant experience.

Oh, and I got Office 2007 too, and its leaps and bounds beyond the old 2003. The interface has been completely reworked and is pretty awesome now if you ask me. Some hardcore nerds aren't going to like it, but IMO the usability has been improved tenfold, which has been way overdue for many years now. It's a huge improvement.

Running ultimate atm. And honestly i love it. Nearly everything was ready for me out of the box, even windows update found EVERYTHING for once. All hardware, etc..

Been running it a couple weeks now. I have to agree with grudge as well. Only glitch I had was my old, old, old soundcard had to be replaced.

lol, serves you right for using Office to write html in the first place

im not. the point is, that with the new outlook, it uses Word's html rendering engine instead of IE's. that means no more background images, floats, or other fairly common css styles. GREAT

it also means you cant receive HTML mails unless you have Office2007 installed. GREAT !

so whats happening is, because MS dev team cant figure out how to properly write an html rendering engine, we all have to write arcane (NONVALID) html to suit everyone's needs.

fortunately this doesn't affect me at all and I expect I'll be happy with a Vista upgrade when I make the jump (probably some time from now)

yeah, it's a massive plus that my battery has not packed up and i have to run on AC power.

sums up mine too, based on briefly using someone else's mac a few years ago

I've just got it installed and it seems pretty slick....

Cant run the system score thing though, says:

"This system doesn't have the necessary multi media support to run this assessment"
