"we" only found out about it because of an American whistleblower. how can "we" be responsible for decisions we didn't even know about? on the other hand, if by "we" you mean "the people who voted for the current government", then that's incorrect too, since only 65% of "us" turn out to vote in 2010, and "we" couldn't decide which of the shower of wankstains on offer was the least objectionable enough to give a majority. the coalition parties received 59.1% of the total vote (36.1% Con + 23% Lib-Dem), which - given that only 65% of the electorate voted - is equal to 38% support amongst registered voters. not exactly "we" territory, is it?

Ecuador has ramped up its defiance of the US over Edward Snowden by waiving preferential trade rights with Washington even as the whistleblower's prospect of reaching Quito dimmed.

President Rafael Correa's government said on Thursday it was renouncing the Andean Trade Preference Act to thwart US "blackmail" of Ecuador in the former NSA contractor's asylum request.

Officials, speaking at an early morning press conference, also offered a $23m donation for human rights training in the US, a brash riposte to recent US criticism of Ecuador's own human rights record.

A document leaked to Univision on Wednesday showed that someone at Ecuador's consulate in London did issue a safe conduct pass for the fugitive on June 22, as he prepared to leave Hong Kong. The name of the consul general, Fidel Narvaez, was printed but not signed.

one thing that baffles me about the coverage of this whole story is that the NSA is being placed centre stage (even in the UK media), when it's clear that what GCHQ is doing makes the NSA's PRISM antics look like amateur hour at the kids table - so much so that the NSA sent 250 of its own analysts to Menwith Hill to suck on the giant industrial scale information firehose that is the Tempora programme (and in the process do an end run around the 4th amendment)
