So... just got sonic ethers shaders working (enables shadows). The only way it worked for me was not using magic launcher. You get some really nice looking shots...

It's a lot of fun. I now play on smp.hcfactions.net
It's hardcore, you guys should join and we can createa Q3W clan. If you die, you lose all your shit and are banned for 5 days.

It seems to be a standard timeframe for hardcore servers. It's incidentally PVP. You create factions and war with other factions. People try to get creative with bases to keep enemies out. It's quite fun and well... dying has real consequences since your killer loots all your gear.
Currently I've created a hidden base up in a jungle tree. It's completely camouflaged from the ground and surrounded by forrest so it's unlikely to get noticed. My plan is to encase a portion of the base in obsidian and fill it with lava then when some asshole decides he's gonna break in anyway he'll get a nice facefull of lava plus whatever other trap I design to activate when the block is broken. Or something.

still not tempted to play but PVP sounds like it could be tons of fun.

Sounds awesome on first connect as a newbie getting your face split in two by an experienced player's ax in the first 2 minutes.

nice
shame it doesn't work with magic launcher. shame also that optifine isn't compatible with the water shader. this + that + OF = super excellent win

your biggest killer will actually be starvation, that's your real enemy. The player you can run from or outwit. Everything has been reset right now for 1.2 so it's a good time to join in but in the last game I had created a base with a pool. In the pool was a hold I could use to escape into an obsidian room which had 1 exit once you went out a switch activated a piston door and blocked the way in and the way out and it was fill with water and it was pitch black in there. I never got to use it but it was my escape route in the event of an attack.
it's minecraft, be creative that's why it's called a hardcore server...

so what exactly are you doing on this hardcore badass server when you're not being killed by other players?

I've wanted to try it out, but just the old GLSL Shaders mod dropped my performance to unacceptible levels in every version since 1.8 (1.7.3 it worked great). Can you actually play with that mod or just get a couple nice screenshots and go back to another install?

The framerate is OK, but it does this blurring thing whenever you move or look around that makes it unplayable.

Btw, you should check out your xp factory. It's been.... updated.

Starting to look better now! I've always thought Minecraft PVP with factions would be the ultimate manifestation of the game... might have to dip back into this for a bit

The blurring thing is probably the Depth of Field effect. I always hated playing with it (it can make for some nice screenshots though).
The GLSL Shaders mod had some files (base.fsh, base.vsh, final.fsh) you could tweak options in. I imagine there's something like that for this mod, since it's built upon it. There must be a way to turn it off.

has anyone else had issues with the fast travel points? sometimes, you pick up damage when you arrive, and when i tried ft'ing to the farm, i seemed to be suffocating in something and had to warp back home to stop myself dying
i don't think it's chunk loading either. pretty sure the castle isn't loaded when i'm in my base, but i can warp there fine every time

No, I have that problem too. I have on my list to look for a replacement mod that doesn't have this problem. The way around it for me is to quickly warp home then warp back, and by this time the chucks will have loaded and it won't suffocate you.

You form factions, claim land and build a fortress then war against other factions. You can do shit like control nether gates access for example.

It does sound like something that has potential though. Kind of like Guild Wars 2's PvP multiplayer.

Yeah it's neat, needs some more bug fixing though, for example some people use transparent textures to see through walls, that's a problem. They combat it by putting this mod though that changes chests and certain walls to look like minerals so that they don't see the chests/diamonds too easily.

lol, minecraft - the wallhacker's paradise
tbh i've never seen the point of PvP in MC, not when there are so many games better suited to that

I think it's the whole creating an impenetrable fortress filled with your treasure that's safeguarded by your creations. I agree the actual pvp aspect is rather lame. Needs better traps and weapon combat.

there's no such thing as an impenetrable fortress in minecraft, and traps are piss easy to spot since they're impossible to make without leaving obvious clues (pressure plates, torches holding up sand/water etc)
secrecy is the only reasonably secure option, and even then you're vulnerable to x-ray packs etc
