The Phase One P45 39megapixel MF digital back produces a 225mb 16-bit TIFF file.
780mb TIFF file? Do the math...

Well I was bored this morning and finally got around to taking some pictures. I managed to underexpose the sky on a lot of them (I was in Manual, and metered off the sky, who knows) but RAW helped.
These were all shot within 30 meters of my house.
Top of our drive:
In the garden
Back garden, looking at the (old) railway bridge which I'm stood on in the below picture
Looking at our house (I couldn't decide which WB I preferred):
I was playing with the WB, I kind of like the old disused railway look. FYI I'm sat about 15m from the track to the bottom-right of the picture, those buildings you see are someone elses.
Planes!
Yes I know I killed the quality with JPG compression. I also know theirs a huge blob on either the lens/sensor which I didn't see before I uploaded them.
I don't claim that their any good, I was really just getting used to manual. I do quite like the first one though

Nice pics from the alpes. Hey, I'll be heading to Europe in April for 5 weeks or so. Out of curiosity, how much are lift tickets? General rental cost? How are the slopes in April? Too late?
Planned destinations: England(2 weeks), Ireland(few days), France(10 days), and either Germany, Netherlands or Switzerland(any suggestions between these three?).
Thanks..
heh, the Micro lens' about 300-400 euros more expensive here.
If you go in April, goto Val Thorens, Deux Alpes or some other place higher than 2000-2500 meters in France. I've been in April to Val Thorens a few years ago and the snow was quite good, though mushy at the end of the day.
Depends on the place but mostly you're paying around 80-120 euros for a ski-ticket for 6-7 days. You'll have access to all lifts in that area.

heh, no big scary dangerous animals here so you're right about the need for telezoom.
i'll be saving for a wide-zoom

It helps to meter something that's not bright like the sky, but a white, black or middle grey tone. You camera is trying to calculate the proper exposure for middle/18% grey, so if you meter the darkest tone in your scene adjust your camera two stops darker by lowering ISO or raising the aperture/shutter speed. It's trying to make the dark tone you meter middle grey, so it will be way too bright if it uses black as it's reference.
Do the opposite if you meter against white (not the sky, but what you think should be the white tone in the scene if it were B&W) and darken it about two stops, just be careful not to brighten it so much that you lose the sky.
If you can get a feeling for what middle grey tones look like, you can just meter against that and pretty much shoot at whatever it says. I think grass is supposed to be a good 18% reference because you're measuring the amount of light it reflects, not it's color.

Thanks, Dave. I'll give those a go next time. The histogram was fine in most shots so I'm happy with them. Maybe I should have taken a couple of bracketed exposures and merged them in Photoshop to get a better balance.
I keep meaning to go
here when the weather's good. It's only about 8 miles from me, should get some decent shots. Most of the shots on the flickr link are from the same place, that place is massive.
