Got a month or so off work - Arduino starter kit came today. Gonna work my way through a few of the starter projects before I tackle my main endeavour .. a photogrammetry based 3D scanner, for which I think I'll have no other option than to buy a Canon 5DS and a fuck off macro lens. Needs must and all that.

I'm currently in the process of "hacking" into a laptop. It's a domain joined device, encrypted with bitlocker and is of course password protected. I'll be able to access the administrator account because I've removed the password that was protecting the account, using nothing more than a blank CD.

That's how weak, windows and most encryption types are.

I find that less difficult than explaining to you why your point, and my point are the same.

Yeah, we have one at work - it's a FARO arm which uses a laser on an arm to scan in pointcloud data of static objects.

For bigger stuff (such as scans of people) we use 3rd parties who specialise in body scans and they use photogrammetry which has literally hundreds of DSLR cameras rigged up on arrays which take a multiple set of picures all at once.

The problem with our FARO arm is it's an old piece of heavy shit which takes ages to set up and can't really scan concave shapes due to the limitations of the arm and if you knock your object you have to start again. Even fluctuations in temperature can fuck the scan up because of expansion and contraction. For my job, as well as original concepting what I do a lot of is take existing objects, scan them in using the FARO and then modify them based on what the designer wants and then either 3D print modifications or make a whole new model based on this original scan data. This is really handy because often the designer doesn't quite know how big a model is, or often, despite looking at it on their screen, what it's going to look like in reality and the models we get professionally printed cost literally hundreds of thousands of pounds. This money, time and effort can end up going down the shitter if they want it 5% smaller or if it doesn't look right or some shit, but if I'm basing the scale and form on an a thing he can tangibly hold in reality he's got a much better idea of the size of the print and we can scale it accordingly digitally.

Anyway, the photogrammetry stuff we get done professionally is fantastic and after some online research I've seen some people do it with objects on turntables. (instead of hundreds of cameras around the object, twist the object around a single camera). This is a decent excuse to get a tax deductible DSLR, learn a bit of simple Arduino programming and hopefully end up with a decent static object scanner that doesn't cost hundreds of thousands of pounds (the FARO originally cost a stupid sum of money and it's pretty obsolete now). My main concern is going to be getting the scale right.

Also the RV-6. A very good reverb-simulator, imo. Digital unit, features that en vogue "shimmer" effect if that's your thing. It's not really good with the classic reverberation-sims like plate, spring, hall but shines on modulate and dynamic mode.

And as a blast from the past: my flanger-unit, Boss BF-2 broke down recently, it was my fault. Got a used one from ebay for 30€.
Are the newer models any better?

I have an old early 80's bf2 and it never quite got me where i wanted.

a few years ago i went on a vintage japan pedal kick and i collected up quite a few.

one flanger that really really impressed me was the arion sfl-1 http://www.effectsdatabase.com/model/arion/sfl1#

i have several and they all sound incredible, grey box or black box , they absolutely kill !

I have not tried the newer shilanka ones tho i only have the japan ones. the japan flanger has the purple battery cover.
i see now that the price has risen dramatically i picked up all of mine for usually under 10$ each!

should be able to snag one for under 40 tho.

truth be told you would not be disappointed with any of the old japan arion pedals, they are incredible, the construction is top notch(real parts mounted through a real board.)

ones i like to use are the sad-1, tube mania, sod-1.

the old sdi-1 red battery cover distortion does a pretty convincing early evh!

The unit for 30€ from ebay was the substitute for the broken down unit. So, I got a working flanger again. I use it very rarely, though. It's a great effect but just not very mix-friendly.

Anyways, the Arion does look interesting, especially because of the feedback loop-ability.

yea theyre plastic but it is tough plastic for sure ive never seen a broken or cracked one, and if it happend every one of them is housed in the same enclosure so you could just swap it into a new one hehe, actually a smart way to keep production costs down too. one thing a bag of arions weighs like 25% of what a bag of boss, dod, ibanez's weighs and the paint wont get all chipped up cuz theyre plastic!

like alot of japan stuff the engineering of these pedal seems deceptively simple yet it is actually very smart and very effective at achieving very good durability at low cost, the pots are board mounted but they are nylon long shafted (flexible)and have a sleeve over them that supports and protects them from diagonal shearing forces. the knobs are located kinda protected by the battery cover (close to and lower than). the skirts of the plastic knobs are less than 1mm from the control plate so that when the knobs get stepped on the skirts transfer the force to the control plate and not so much to the pots, kind of like the ibanez 9 series but crappier! :P . i have some older 80's dod's and the pots are super vulnerable but theyre pretty durable too .

none of it matters to me as all i care about is the sound.

i have heard some very experienced people praise them for their sound, for ex, phaser comes close to mutron, chorus comes close to leslie, and sad-1 come close to echoplex!

i dont know if i'd go that far but they sound dam good

Planning some holidays

Local Holiday: We dropped in to our local motoring club to pick up some free road maps yesterday. Yes, some freebies still exist.

We are planning a driving holiday down south over two weeks this July (our winter in Australia). We just love the cold. Google maps say it is about 4,000 kilometres (round trip)but you can add 1k (tourist contingency) so about 5,000 kilometres all up. That will make a nice drive. We have friends we can drop in on and it will be nice to catch up

Last we were down that way we did the picturesque Great Ocean Road. I have a DVD somewhere with our helicopter tourist flight over the The Twelve Apostles and that was awesome.

Overseas Holiday: While there I picked up a map of the United Kingdom and paid $18 for it. Like I said, some freebies exist. Later today I'll be studying that UK map as the intention is to do a driving holiday there 2017/2018.

Might throw in a European River Cruise as they are currently offering heavily discounted airfares to Europe. We figure if we are so close to the UK why not combine them.
