Those kinda themes always look awesome, but functionality wise, they suffer. I used to use litestep a lot, and despite being the envy of all the other nerds for having a fancy GUI, I went back to explorer every time

You gotta put the hours in and craft a UI that's truly useful to the way you work. If you can pull it off and carry some style along the way all the better, but most people see the prefab themes and stick with them... but the only way to get the most from these apps is to roll your own theme.
All the resource meters and weather checkers are nice, but unless you've got a specific need for them on your workstation they're just fluff.

actually i prefer blackbox for the default shell after being on several distros over the past year or so. i prefer the minimalistic look and this is hardly fancy. and let's face it, XP looks shit. i let the start menu come to
me.

I control my Mac Powerbook with a program called Quicksilver. I press apple+space, it opens a window, I type in F, it shows Firefox cause that's the most common associated name when typing F (it learns what you use the most) and it show the most used command for it. I just press Enter and it starts Firefox.
Ok, it's more than just an Application starter. You can use it as dictionary, calculator, google search, doing stuff with files, filebrowser, etc. You can access everything and do a lot with only the keyboard. That's great when using a laptop

actually, as far as Blackbox is concnerned tweaking menus and such to your liking (productivity-wise) is as simple as editing text files.

perhaps, but that can be said about anything or anyone. you don't think about postcard looking photos when that fucking thing is right under your feet.
