I thought the season opener was a bit weak. I thought the chemistry between Dexter and the psycho doctor was terrible. The whole scene in the morgue felt awkward. Hopefully they can finish strong...

I think the awkwardness was intentional. Having her spill the beans at the end of the ep was a suspension killer tho, just her giving the drawings would've been enough.

I'm really liking the Vogel-as-a-maternal-figure aspect of this season

I bet she's teh killer. She's probably wanting Dexter to finish her off. And since Deb's new hobby is random homicide, she probably blames Dexter for that and in the finale will end up killing him...then herself.

The obvious answer is that Vogel is the killer. But the question is, will they go the obvious route? Or will they surprise us with something better? Cause if Vogel is the killer, I'll be sorely disappointed...

Deb's the brain baller killer. She has manifested an alter-ego through her self-guilt and traumatic experiences with the Ice-Truck killer and Dexter. Vogel threatens to expose Dexter, Deb kills Vogel. Either Vogel takes the fall as the baller, and Dexter and Deb live on as serial killers, or Deb goes out in guts and glory and takes the fall for Dexter's past deeds, freeing Dexter from his dark passenger. Batista kills Quinn for fucking his sister.

Yeah...Vogel is the one obsessed with it and I'm quite sure there will be a scene with her brain (or part of it) being placed in a jar for study at some lab...just as she envisioned.

Oh...and I've revised my theory of how Dexter dies: he's still shot by Deb, but in a fit of jealous rage...since creepy head-shrinking granny seems to like getting cozy and touchy-feely with Dexter. Deb will walk in while he's giving granny's grey, shriveled box a tongue-lashing and blow his brains out while saying "fuck fuck fuck" over and over again as she continually pulls the trigger on an empty gun...then she'll have sex with a random guy that walks by, since - the entire series - Deb's habitually had spontaneous sex right after something horrible happens.

I see how this fits into your fantasies... Deb walks into a room where she sees GFY standing naked (something horrible happens). Distraught, she actually has sex with him. "Fuck fuck fuck!"

I don't think she'll be back, like the rest of these season arc guest stars. E.g. we haven't heard from Lumen again.

Not necessarily. She's gone and hasn't been a problem. No reason to think she'd be one now...

I'm going out on a limb and saying that Dexter kills himself. Deb is killed by the Brain Surgeon after Dexter lures him in too sloppily. This obviously brings Dexter back to what happened with Rita (and everyone else who got hurt for being close). Combined with everything Vogel's been feeding him he realizes the code applies to himself most of all. He can show Vogel it really was her that created him by ending the cycle of pain in the least destructive, least selfish way. He thinks it will protect Harrison from Vogel and the life Dexter was forced into.

He sets up his boat with pictures of the innocents he hurt, lights it on fire out to sea, and chest stabs himself like his victims.

I didn't like how dexter made the leap of logic that Ron Galutso was hiding something simply because he failed to disclose that he was a former psychopath patient of Vogel's. Just because someone isn't comfortable revealing that highly personal information doesn't mean they're "suspicious". Dexter wouldn't have displayed such unintelligence in the first 3-4 seasons. New writers have gotten better, but they still kinda suck.
