I'm getting owned so hard by this game...

Don't listen to them. Get yourself some solid skills in medium before tackling hard and the same with expert. On the PS2 I flew through the game, happy to just get a passing score on each song. I can play most of the expert songs BUT I didn't build solid skills so my play is extremely sloppy and inaccurate so I pretty much still 3 star most hard/expert songs. And a 5 star score on medium owns a 3 star on expert. Now that I've been improving my play on medium (2 songs away from 5 star on all) my hard scores are way way better.

my problem is that I have 5 stars on almost every song on medium, but hard is a problem because I seem to have hardwired the first 4 buttons to my fingers somehow. That fifth button requires you to change position (I think?) so I get all lost.

see, thats why you have to start on hard. you get to learn to use the orange button from the start. now you have to unlearn your fixed position stance.
started GH1 on medium, flew through it. then i did hard and got better ratings instantly, mostly because it feels a lot more natural on hard (as mentioned earlier, there are missing notes on medium that break the momentum).
started GH2 on hard, got 5 stars on each try for pretty much all the songs till the Vans venue \o/
.. oh, and freya. just cant get 5 stars on that one and i cant figure out why not

I agree with bit. Easy and Medium make it harder to adjust to Hard and Expert. And Emka, I hate going back and playing Medium and Easy, because those missing notes fuck me up and occasionally I get a 99% instead of 100%. No all-gold venues for me, and I'll be arsed if I'm gonig to replay those songs to try to do it, either.

I was going to get it today but it seems to be out of stock in the shops i checked. They mentioned something about the guitar being late in delivery or that there's a problem with the current guitar

if they told you there were problems with the current guitar, they are misinformed.
as mentioned earlier in this thread, what was to believed a hardware issue was in fact a software issue and therefore not related to the guitar controller.

I didn't see you submit any covers of any popular songs during the talent contest...
I have a real guitar and its 100x harder than guitar hero.
