the constant gardener - 7/10

pretty good and downbeat mixing of the political and personal, and a british movie which *isn't* either a gangster flick or constume drama, which is a plus

Watch the trailer for it if you can http://videodetective.com/home.asp?PublishedID=810034

I think this is just about the best tv movie I've ever seen. I'm glad to have the dvd of it.

Derailed - 5/10

Decent enough movie, almost spooky at times. I'm wondering if Jennifer Aniston is required by contact to have her nipples perking in everything (between Friends and just about any other movie she's done).

Being John Malkovich.

Few movies can actually offer a never seen before plotline, but this movie is one of them.

A very funny and interesting black comedy with a slight element of sci-fi. Highly recommended.

C.R.A.Z.Y. 8.5/10

It's a 2005 Quebec film about family, sexuality, religion, and the conflicts between the three whenever they converge. As a film it is beautifully shot, thematically rich, and emotionally involving. Being about brothers, it reminded me more than once of A River Runs Through It, and I noticed references to A Clockwork Orange and Citizen Kane in there too. (The referential nature, as well as the generic diversity are reminiscient of Cohen Bros films like The Man Who Wasn't There, but this is no film noir.) Top it off with a soundtrack consisting largely of Pink Floyd, David Bowie, and Patsy Cline, and you have a real winner on your hands.

Thanks for the recommendation. That sounds like it has potential. There is a lot of great film that comes out of Quebec. Much more so than the rest of Canada.

Off the top of my head a few Quebec films I'd suggest,

Night Zoo
Jesus of Montreal
Leolo

Oceans' Twelve
Sodenberg's attempt to maintain the stenographic way of storytelling gets mangled by the amount of subplots and the unrealistic timeframe they get things done.

failed :(
