This is reporting that the levels of soil contamination up to 40km away is ridiculously high. The amount found in villages that far away from Japan's plant is 2.5 times the lower limit of the red zone on this map.

Yeah it can be characterized as being much more like Chernobyl now than Three Mile Island. Looks like it's only going to get worse before it gets better too.

Yeah, when they said the high radiation levels were an error? They were wrong.
Engineers speculated that the radiation surges may be coming from a partial meltdown of the fuel core of reactor No. 1. It appears that small segments of the melted fuel rods in that reactor are undergoing what is known as "localized criticality," emitting brief flashes of heat and radiation.
I guess the big question here is -- how is this going to impact manga and anime production?

My brother works for Subaru and I was talking to him about this earlier. This is going to majorly impact global operations for them, they had 2 months worth of stock on hand but the logistics of getting this stuff out is a bit more complex now. Not to mention that production has not managed to resume just yet. To reiterate the obvious, the effects of this on the country's economy is going to be devastating at best. Screw manga, we need our rice mobilez O_O

The Nuclear Safety Commission of Japan released a preliminary calculation Monday saying that the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant had been releasing up to 10,000 terabecquerels of radioactive materials per hour at some point after a massive quake and tsunami hit northeastern Japan on March 11.
The disclosure prompted the government to consider raising the accident's severity level to 7, the worst on an international scale, from the current 5, government sources said. The level 7 on the International Nuclear Event Scale has only been applied to the 1986 Chernobyl catastrophe.
The current provisional evaluation of 5 is at the same level as the Three Mile Island accident in the United States in 1979.
According to an evaluation by the INES, level 7 accidents correspond with a release into the external environment radioactive materials equal to more than tens of thousands terabecquerels of radioactive iodine 131. One terabecquerel equals 1 trillion becquerels.

I repeat, there was and will *not* be any significant release of radioactivity from the damaged Japanese reactors.
By "significant" I mean a level of radiation of more than what you would receive on - say - a long distance flight, or drinking a glass of beer that comes from certain areas with high levels of natural background radiation.

This sucks. I really wanted to visit Japan. And yes, I know it's still there, but it's not the same and probably won't be for a while.

The last thing I read on the topic of Chernobyl was that only the emergency workers died and those who later developed issues did so because they consumed iodine 131 laden food.
