Re: 17th Dec - Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Watched it yesterday on IMAX 3D laser format at Scotiabank Theatre. I don't usually enjoy movies in 3D but this one turned out pretty cool. They have the 70mm cameras at this location, but no film for it. Sad really, as I think there are 3 70mm cameras in Toronto, but the only one that ever sees any use anymore is at the TIFF Lightbox theatre that shows old feature films.
I enjoyed the movie overall (7/10), but I have a few mixed feelings:
New main characters are all likable. Finn, Rey, BB8. Good chemistry between the main stars. I liked how they both showed some indication that they were morally good people willing to fight for the right cause. The prequels tried to introduce new characters but clearly failed. Qui-Gon, JarJar, Padme, Anakin, all unrelatable characters with wooden acting and poor lines. I'm glad they turned it around here.
That said, I found some characters seemed completely irrelevant. Poe seemed sort of unnecessary and Phasma was barely a part of the movie at all. As a high ranking Stormtrooper, was she so easily coerced into deactivating the shields? So the First Order is headed by Emperor Gollum? Kylo Ren seemed pretty bad-ass at first and I was hoping he would be as menacing as Darth Maul. But then he took off his helmet and turned out to be just a DRuM look-alike emo dude with daddy issues.
I found that the original characters seemed like more of a distraction from the new characters. It's nice seeing them on screen again, but I felt that they were presented almost as a bucket list of characters who's part in the movie felt forced.
Death Star 3 was a poor rehash. The Empire/First Order clearly doesn't learn. Same superweapon, same vulnerability. In fact, the whole "need to find that droid with the plans/map" is repetitive. The plot overall seemed like a very predictable rehash of EpIV.
SPECULATION:
Rey is Luke's daughter. Jedi's aren't supposed to have relationships because they can be used to turn people to the Dark Side, that's what happened to Anakin. Luke made a mistake and isolated himself in fear that others would discover the truth and use those he loves against him. Besides, Luke doesn't want to end up on Jerry Springer for fucking Ewoks, the sick fuck.
Hux keeps a copy of Mein Kampf close at hand, always.
Han Solo is dead. Actually dead. He ain't coming back.
Rey wants Finn's BBC.
I watched the credits, but I couldn't remember Phant's real name.

Re: 17th Dec - Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Bit of controversy there, the prick in charge of credits left entire departments out and didn't credit anyone under supervisor in costume (myself included). Big uproar, many twisted jimmies etc. Some people virtually quit over it, it's a pretty big deal. None of the girls who make costumes and the tailors got a mention which is really bad.
They're amending the DVD and luckily for me I'm credited as costume concept modeller in the official art book. Sucks for everyone else though.
edit: apparently I'm on imdb: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm7217669/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cr390

Just thought I'd make this post to laugh in the face of anyone who didn't enjoy this movie.
Thick, solid, tanned and tight in all the right places... smashing 10's on the regular.
Re: 17th Dec - Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Yeah, it's a great film.
I'm a little concerned about the next film. Rian Johnson doesn't have the greatest resume. Looper was ok, I guess. I just wish J.J. was doing the next one...

He'd be completely retarded to stray away from the winning formula of TFA, being that it's the most successful film of all time.

He may have the formula, but does he have the talent to make it great? We shall see...

Joss Wedon for Ep9?
Re: 17th Dec - Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Given ESB, he's got a huge fucking task on his hands.
Re: 17th Dec - Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Looper wasn't good.
Re: 17th Dec - Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Looper was fucking terrible, actually.
