erm not really been doin any, did manage to turn q3dm17 around an turn it into a ctf but some of the textures are a bit dodgy

What do you have in mind for your first real map? Modelling isn't a requirement usually

modeling seems a more fun thing to do, as for maps i dont have any ideas, thats the problem i was gonna do some sorta space thing but cant be bothered with all those triggers and shit, i need inspiring...

Triggers are the easiest thing in the world.
target "targetname" on desired trigger
targetname "targetname" on the target_position to which you want it to aim

Don't do ideas, just make some nice interconnected rooms for your first map as you go. She won't be pretty at first anyway
