Same as most. Which is why being able to max out all skills doesn't actually matter as most won't max out all skills. The best of both world is there and paradoxically, it'll piss off both camps. The obsessive knurds that'll pick on being able to max all skills are the very same that'll go hunt out all the books, and the casuals that would like to reach Mt. Badass stats-wise will feel constrained by the level cap and specialisation.

Ho-hum.

I guess I'm in the middle. Cause I just play the game and enjoy myself. I don't worry about wether or not I'm becoming to "specialized". I just walk around, do side missions when I find em, explore the wastelands, and work on the main mission when I feel like it. I don't see how some of you can enjoy any game with the way you play, analyzing shit so much...

Same here, but I can see how people who want to hold true to an RPG formula want some actual incentive to distribute your skills intelligently and not a game where you can eventually just max everything out so there really isn't a need to thoughtfully create a character - so that if you are a magic user in a game you can't just run up and whack enemies to death with a stick if you are out of magic points or something.

but since the main story sucks so much and this is a "sandbox game" (or whatever the fuck people want to call it to justify it's lack of story) isn't most of the fun supposed to come from wandering around finding shit?
So if wandering around finding shit is the plot of the game, but wandering around finding shit emphasizes the greatest flaws in the character engine... isn't that a problem?

it's especially frustrating when thinking about it in retrospect; because the niggles I have with the character sheet would have all been solved by bethesda sticking to the source material they had to work with. All they really had to do to fix the skilling was make it work like previous games: 200 pt scale vs 100; no bonus for tagging; tag skills grow 2:1; when you get over 100 into super-specialized land the skill points start costing double so tags goto 1:1 and secondaries get 1:2 (IIRC after 150 that went up again to 1:3).
made it so much harder to tank out more than one skill, and when you did it really meant something.

in a sudden epiphany, i think the root of my problems with this game is really that it has no sense of accomplishment for anything. it's just empty.

That epiphany you mention is the same thing that has hit me as I've been away from this game awhile...I really had no desire to go back to it, and I've kind of come to the same conclusion as to why....

People play games for different reasons. Some play them to feel they have accomplished something. Others play them to experience something. Not all games give a sense of accomplishment, and not all games offer an interesting experience. Some offer both (although this is very rare).

Read this (it's 11 pages):

http://insultswordfighting.blogspot.com ... -talk.html

Although I don't really agree with the pejorative "tourist", that is the group I mostly identify with. I sure as hell don't play games for accomplishments.

The first set of DLC sounds weak. I don't care for the game in the capacity they're focusing on, but The Pitt sounds like it could be good times.

So the third DLC will contain a level cap increase. Nice...

Quite possibly one of the coolest screenies I've seen for this game:

that screenie is an orgasm that reoccurs over and over in a surprisingly unique way every time, when coupled with the rag doll physics.

as I said b4, this is the first game of its type I have bothered playing but I had such a pleasurable experience from it, games like cod4 and dead space feel like watching a movie going through the motions in which you simply have to keep the reel spinning, in comparison.

fallout 3 is the reason I'm excited about gta4...can't get enough of this gamestyle now. Here's to hoping gta4 doesn't turn out to be shit

gta4 is much more plot driven with lots of cut-scenes and actors.
(which is why i found it more enjoyable)

this is an opinion rather than a spoiler - if you haven't already finished it, stay away from the main quest thing. the ending is total shit and strips all the fun away. you'll get a lot more out of the game if you just put it down when you're bored with it.

GTA4 is probably the most overrated game to have been released in the last 5 years. All this talk of an 'oscar worthy story' is pure crap - the story starts out well and is reasonably well written, but somewhere around the half-way point the plot totally deteriorates into bullshit and seems to serve little purpose than to introduce more and more irrelevant characters and repetitive missions and the actual plot becomes completely garbled. It's a half-way competent story that serves to introduce new missions, nothing more and nothing less. Not that F3 has a better story since it's also disappointing in this regard, but the main plot in F3 does not make or break the game because most of the fun comes from doing other stuff. I played F3 for 50 hours and just blew through most of the story in 3 hours at the end.

Also, with GTA4: they've taken out half of the really fun things you could do in previous GTA games. And holy fuck...those annoying side characters that get on your nerves every 5 minutes. Wow.

And I am not the only person that was MASSIVELY disappointed by GTA4 and the massive hype campaign, judging by the harsh criticisms some websites like GT have received for giving their GOTY to GTA4, and the negative responses in forums like NeoGaf, disappointment is widespread. As a matter of fact, a lot of those "professional editors" that praised GTA4? They didn't even fucking complete the game before they started raving about it prior to release, or only played it under Rockstar's tightly controlled conditions.

/rant

You may enjoy it though I guess if you substantially lower your expectations.

lol

Wasn't there a news report that someone posted here...like...two days after GTA4 was available that claimed that everyone on the planet had bought a copy? The post also claimed the game cost $100 million to make (something for which I still have not found evidence for).

I'm still laughing at that because people are still buying it. I mean....if everyone that could had bought a copy in the game's first week as was reported...why are people still buying it? So they can have two copies? Three? Perhaps as coasters or to prop up a short-legged table? What a pile of bs.

Seriously...the hype that surrounded GTA4 was beyond what had come before (before and after release) and it is no surprise whatsoever that it was going to be a huge disappointment...and further proof of the uselessness of the gaming press.

nah, it was '$500 mil in the first week', which might be true but is not profit and therefore much less interesting.
still a big number tho.

The focus is on fun rather than omfgseri0s.... which is where all the fun lies in gta games anyway....

Only burned a few hours on it so far but after slurrying a bunch of houses/people/cops and haring around on some awesome vehicles... I already dig it.

Finished Fallout 3 last week. It was decent but definitely nowhere near as good as I was hoping. The story, characters, quests, and world all felt a little flat and empty tbh.

I'm not trying to be a dick, but which games are you playing where the world, in general, is more full than Fallout 3?
