The laser was an added bonus actually. Most of the weapon mounted lights are pretty pricey, without a laser. This one got great reviews for it's ability to endure multiple recoils from large caliber weapons and it has a buit in laser. Good stuff.

Why in the hell would you need a laser sight on a fucking shotgun? Are people that seriously bad at aiming a shotgun?

Did you even try to read my last post? It's not like I felt I needed a laser. I wanted a quality, shock resistant light. The one I bought just happened to have a laser on it.

Did I say that was directed at you personally?
Now this one is pointed at you personally, the red dot sight? Same reason as before, why the hell on a shotgun? If you can't aim a shotgun and hit pretty much what you want without assistance, then you need to put the shotgun down.

Well since I was the only person posting in this thread that was putting a laser on a shotgun, one could only assume that you were directing your comment towards me.
About the red dot site. You do know that you can shoot slug rounds out of a shotgun, don't you?

I was speaking in general. You notice in the second part I said people not you.
Only since I was around 5. Same difference. If you're using a shotgun at a distance where that will matter, even with a slug, you're probably better off using a better rifle. You said it was for home defense, that wouldn't entail long distance shooting. If you're shooting at people that far away you're not defending your home anymore, you're getting even.

I will be interested to learn whether you can shoot more than one and still have the red dot accurately aligned.
I was very disappointed to learn that because of the coating and heat shield I could not get ghost rings installed on mine, despite having it tapped for the rail already. Its only a slug gun, and I want easy aiming since it will only be fired on rapidly closing brown and white bears. The red dot seems to be my only option.

If the target is closing in that fast and your going for the 'shotty', I don't really think a red dot will help much. I'm pretty sure that you'll just point at the bear and start pumping slugs. Plus if it's moving like a bear can, you won't have much time to plan out your shot. But good luck with that anyway.

Right, exactly why I thought a red dot would be a good idea. No squinting, no real aiming per se, just squeeze the trigger when the dot lights up the target.
FWIW, I run myself and my companions through some target practice and bear behaviour training before we head into bear country, and we have plenty of nonlethal deterrence too. Its just a final line of defense.

I think you might be confusing a red dot with the laser sights. The red dot doesn't 'light up' a target, you have to look through it like any other sight. The laser is the one that projects a light onto the target. If I'm mistaken then looking down the iron sights will take no longer than looking at the red dot sights with a shotgun. And in that kind of emergency with a bear it won't really matter which one you are looking through, you only have a couple shots anyway at most.

No I'm good. You can't see the red dot unless it is in the line of fire, so when it is over the target (lighting up, although not physically on the target but in the sight itself) you are good to go. From my experience looking for the red dot on the target, with that large reticle, is much faster than sighting down irons (or in my case the muzzle bead).

Scourge. With a shotgun, that is the only situation where a laser sight WOULD come in handy. You have to go for simple cerebral input. A little red dot on a charging bear... squeeze. This is the first time I've thought you were fulla shit. I am saddened.

Well in my experience with shotguns, sighting on the bead is pretty damn fast anyway. about 1/2 a sec after hitting the shoulder. I do understand that you might prefer the red dot. But I don't see how that will help you in a home invasion
