you have to realise that the debate around borders is an awkward collision of culture and economics. culturally, progressives are all in favour since it creates a more multicultural society; politically, it doesn't sit well with helping the poor since it drives down wages (which have already been stagnant or falling for people at the bottom end since the 1980s). likewise, the economic right love the idea for the same reason that progressives aren't so sure, while the cultural right hate it for the same reason progressives love it
