I think I have had that before, about 6 or so years ago, happened at my grandfathers house, I remember lying there for a while and I didn't move, can't recall too much excep that I didn't like it.

That's the more proper name for it. Go look it up if you want to know more. It's completely normal behavior, wheter most people are aware of it or not.
It occurs to most people during REM sleep. It's just somewhat rare that people are awoken in a way to not pull out of it and then become aware of it.
I was just trying to find some more information, and while I didn't find anything good in the first few links on google, I found a curious explanation I hadn't heard before. Not saying I believe it, but this is interesting at least:

i've had the breathing thing several times. mostly when im totally stoned and fall asleep. then in my sleep i get a sort of electrical buzz in my head that wakes me up and then i notice im out of breath.
quite annoying, is there any way to prevent this from happening?

I wonder if this is what people are misinterpreting as Alien abductions and experimentations?. If you're dreaming about Aliens and 'wake' when you're in paralysis mode, it'd be quite easy to interpret that as you really being abducted and probed.

There’s no doubt about it. It was a ghost, or aliens. There’s to much hard evidence for it to be anything else, like bullshit.
