Voila.
Sometime take a look at MS word and the length of the rulers when you change screen resolution. Per inch of ruler length in the document you'll see exactly 72 dots in line. That's 72dpi right there (or whatever dpi your computer is outputting to the screen - some do 72, others do 100).
If you dont believe this you're dumber than I thought.
