Also, one could say that, prior to the planes being hijacked, the odds of some arab guys with little boxcutters causing a couple wars was rather nil....

just saying that hindsight is always 20/20...but when you are in the heat of the moment situation that may be life or death for many people, sometimes you're forced to act in a manner that minimizes risk for the maximum # of people. I doubt the protocol that the air marhsalls follow when someone on the plane says they have a bomb is to think to themselves "he's already been screened...so there really isn't much to worry about."
For a smart guy that's the stupidest thing I think I've ever heard you say. Someone was shot and killed for making a threat. The whole thing reeks of paranoia to me.

That's what happens, though. If someone is confronted by cops, says he has a gun, and starts reaching into his coat, he's going to get shot, too.

Just curious here Jackal, what would you have done?

I would have kicked the guy's head in.
Apparently the guy just wanted off the plane/entry way. He kept telling one of the airport staff he needed off and when they wouldn't immediately let him go he said he had a bomb. At least that's what they just said on the news.

Actually I have no idea what I would have done. I havn't been trained for that sort of thing and I don't think a person could pay me to even touch a gun. If you threw Jackal the research analyst in the situation I would have fucking ran.

and likely would have been shot too.

"That man is running in the airport! HE'S A TERRORIST!!!"

Lol, felonious running. "WE THOUGHT HE HAD SCISSORS!"

I ask because I myself don't know what I would have done, I can only speculate. That's all any of us can do, because we weren't there. I can see reasons why they would have shot him, but if they were close enough to restrain him and could see his hands, then I would suggest that perhaps the shooting was not necessary.

I see where you're coming from. I just think if the marshall would have been thinking rationally he would have realized shooting the man was extreme.

He probably did realize that it was extreme, but I can only assume that he was absolutely convinced that the guy had a bomb. Then again, I've heard some negative things about the quality of the people that have become air marshals recently, so anything's possible.

Someone shot and killed for making a threat happens all over the place I'd guess. So then, praytell, when should the shooting take place - AFTER THE THREAT IS CARRIED OUT? The luxury of waiting to see if it is a fake threat or not isn't something that an air marshall always has.

You say you have a bomb, and then you run away from the air marshalls who are trying to stop you, towards other people who, as far as they know, you may be planning to blow up...
hmm...what to do on that one?

And if the guy HAD blown himself and others up we'd all be sitting here saying "damn, why didn't they take him out when they had the chance...?"

i dunno - i'm hearing reports (from other thread) that he never claimed to have a bomb...

He wanted out of the entry point to the plane and freaked out. There was a guard directly next to him as well.

I just recently started a job at JFK airport and I will just say that airport security does kinda suck. Now I'm not an expert on the technology that they use or how flawed it is or secure it is or whatever but it just 'seems' like it isn't as good as it should be.

As for shooting the guy, who gives a shit? He should know better than to fuckin say he has a god damn bomb on board no matter how bad he wants to get off the fucking plane. Death is a little extreme, but that's America for you, right?
