i was only quoting the suggested retail of both the ipod ($299) and that Belkin mic ($50).

also, are you sure that $20 price tag is for one that's compatible with the 5G? i see ones around that price for the 3G, but not the 5G.

The really funny thing about "audiophiles" is that by the time in your life you can afford "pro audio" gear, you're already succumbing to presbyacusis
i think it's funnier that almost every iPod owner gets super defensive.

now about codecs, i use .mp3 and .flac exclusively. both for obvious reasons. how hard is that?
It wasn't really a comment about iPods per se, it's more that I've done enough neurophysiology and music engineering to have noticed that "audio fidelity" and "pleasant to the ear" are pretty much diametrically opposed. I'd been looking at some articles about MP3 players on Wired, and the frothing comments from self-declared audiophiles (ears of a bat, etc.) were more what I was aiming at.

wired's "audioholics" user comments are complete rubbish. i'd wholly have to agree with you there.

Oi, thanks for all the advice. I just discovered that I get a student/staff discount on iPods from my school. Unfortunately, I can also get a discount on the Zen, too, so it doesn't help the decision. With the iPod discount, though, I could justify buying the external microphone (which I also get a discount on! :icon25: )
I'm just going to have to go to Best Buy this weekend and try them all out. Thanks for the help, though. :)

Seriously dont go for a Creative product. They're nice when they work, but as soon as they break you're in a world of shit with their customer support.

Duly noted, thanks.

I've always been a fan of creative's stuff, but I've never had to deal with their customer support. Most people have had good things to say about iPod replacements.

That said, I hear from a lot of people who NEEDED to replace their iPods, which worries me just as much.

I've got my muvo on the desk next to me here because I had a pathetic attempt at trying to get it working again yesterday.
I might as well put it in the bin and forget about it, but I'm still bitter over how much it cost me compared to how much life I got out of it (couple of months tops).
