Ideally, what would be perfect, is to have Quake4World handle the main entrance and indexing, including uploading of maps/mods, while people like myself can provide back end space and bandwidth.
A simple host entry could point to any machine I setup for space/bw.
Who owns Quake4World?
P.S. I was just told that officially 1.1 patch will fix the download issue. Awesome. :icon25:

Have just updated script at
http://gib.fps.net/x.php?ip=213.200.95.48:27995 with amended instructions on the page so it confirms to Ids cvar structure. Would be nice if someone could test the different url and cvar with a diff server (as thats when see main bugs).
Iluvmymac, as jester! says, I don't think the serverdownload is something thats fixable via mods (but don't underestimate other peoples resources where necessary people often find a way). I also don't think one mod fixing it is a solution either (unless they release it to all), it needs to be something that all mods (or no mods) can use I think.
The script has mirrors, if mirrors are added (i.e click on the above url, you will see first pak has 3 mirrors). I can add more mirrors (anyone just mail me with any for the moment for any specific files). Ultimately I don't think its worth spending "too" much time coding something too sexy like mirror checking or rotatiing, but if Id don't fix this I think its worth shoving all the info into a mysql db and lots of mirrors.
I'm not sure ultimately how "expandable" Ids version (if it was working) is either. Normally any cvar has a limit of length, so when you get long cvars with every custom pak in it I wouldn't be surprised if some limit is hit (these lists on servers with a huge amount of files are going to be crazy to maintain, especially with multiple mods).
I do think whatever, given a few weeks we will see this fixed in a patch, so I wouldn't worry "too much" personally. I just can't see how they can't fix a problem as fundamental is file downloads, thats been in since at least Quake 1 iirc.

Since I'll be plunking $300 a month down for this project (machine, space, and bandwidth), I hope there is no objection on me using q4files.escapedturkey.net
My company =
http://www.escapedturkey.com (I'm not advertising just saying who I am).
Is this okay?
What is needed are the following:
1. A basic web site, with news information.
2. A page with instructions on how to use url redirection.
3. A file management system for user submisssions (uploads of maps, mods, models, etc.)
4. An index of the files for manual downloading.
5. Volunteer staff to evaluate files for safety and organization.
Thoughts? :icon25:

I have volunteered for review of content as well but I cannot check files to make sure that they are safe for play. We really need someone for that.

Just wondering if it might be worth chatting to quake4maps.net chaps who had a sort of map repo set up
http://files.quake4maps.net/upload/files.php?cat=1 and maybe combine forces or something. Has most of the work done already, just no idea about bandwidth etc.

I've said this via PM, but whatever you need from Quake4World you can have. The only thing I don't have infinite supply of is bandwidth, but web hosting and use of the domain/subdomain is no problem at all.
files.quake4world.com with banners for escapedturkey?

That would be perfect. I'm sure it'd be easy to setup my machine as a backend for bw/file server stuff. :icon25:

If you can find out if he can share the code, so we could put it on quake4world.com that'd be great. :icon31:

I'm confused now.
Should we have it q4files.quake4world.com or something else?
Thoughts?

The q4 seems unnecesary

Just use quake4world.com?
What would be involved in putting a file management system on Quake4world.com with a back end server (different IP and location) for file serverness?

Dead easy.
At least, I think it is.
I feel like picking up my text editor and getting the PHP I had already coded back up to scratch, but I wont be at a PC where that's possible until the 1st.

No rush. We have to wait for the 1.1 update for all this to happen. :icon25:

In the meantime...this might serve as a template of sorts.
one could visit
http://mhgaming.com
click downloads and submit a download link
an admin checks it out and puts it up at
ftp://ftp.mhgaming.com/Quake4/pk4s/q4base/
then serveradmins use that address for autoredirect (when its fixed)
We can setup ftp mirroring for whomever wants to play along.

This is a community project. Not one individual is more important than another. It's not a job either. It's purely volunteer. We should use what works best and makes everyone happy. :icon31:

I know, but I figured that if we code a site from scratch, which is going to be little more than two days work, and make it look professional and easy to use, as we are used to doing, it will be more useful to the community and be taken more seriousley, in turn boosting the popularity of the site, the recognition of player-created work for the game and your revenues. I mean, we usually get payed $350 a pop plus maintenance fees for these things. We want to make a professional quality, wasy to use, beautiful website and maintain it indeffinitely for free. You could, I am sure, easily copy n paste some code together with some stock q4 qraphix and call it a file depot, or we could actually make something special out of it. I feel like this could be alot better than what you are willing to settle on because it is easy. What works best and makes everyone happy will be a well-rounded website coded specifically for this purpose that offers authors and the community a chance to evaluate/describe each file in detail and ... wtfevar.

The benefit of putting it on quake4world.com will be familiarity and people will take it more seriously - due to the association with quake3world.com

sry Lenard I wasn't trying to trump your work or anything like that.
Just wanted to point out what a stock phpnuke site has to offer towards the goal, which is that download link functionality.

I think 2 days work for a full site with full functionality like approval systems (if thats going in) for files and uploading (maybe you are just meaning frontend or something), website, news, etc etc is a little ambitious. Less so if using available open scripts etc, but if coding from the bottom up it is imo (not saying thats more or less preferable, just I think being realistic).
I agree quake4world.com would be generally more accepted (which often people can be funny about). I also agree ultimately professional looking is the way to go to get people using such a system (which is the key), but depends on resources which is the bugbear of keeping most places looking professional and uptodate. Sometimes both can be incorporated if people know any specific system well.
