Its playable out of the box.

We all have to acknowledge that the numbers playing q4 online regularly are well below expectations. A lot of this has to do with its apparent unfriendliness to new players (a problem exasperbated by the autodl bug).
I feel its certainly important for the time being, that public servers run vQ4 to enable newcomers to the series (or maybe even genre) to connect and play games with realtive ease (we won't go into custom maps here). In time some of these players may progress onto mods, others may choose to stay with vq4 - its all about choice and preference.

The FPS arguement is a strong one, and certainly makes the difference between q4 being playable or not to some people. But its not a simple as all switching to a mod - I fear if we did we'd loose potential players overnight

Yeah I never do think about the truly new players to the genre...

FFS, its like talking to chalk. Does every Q3 server run OSP? Does every Q2 server run Lithium? Does every UT server run Red Orchestra? No, the point is that there are people who just plain out enjoy playing the stock FPS game(s). Why would be the point of running a modded server then turning it back into the default game?

Hmm well, at the risk of breaking my diplomatic head, I can see reason in this too :icon30:

Q4MAX can be set up to look and move precisely like vq4. At first this does seem like a pointless exercise, but on further reflection there are few interesting points.

First theres the obvious performance gain for low spec machines. Since the end of novemeber i am the proud owner of a q4 uber PC - but not everyone else is. Q4max can be tailored graphically to suit the machine to a greater degree than vQ4 can. (making the game playable for a lot of q3 players for the first time)

Q4MAX have a working voting system. Finally server admin can allow voting in a controlled manner. On top of this they have started to add admin commands, and have the ability to assign a referee (votable to iirc) who has restricted control of the server.

Brightskins - personally I find the immensely helpful for picking out opponents through my weakened eyesight. But lol if i wasn't just starting to enjoy the added dimension the shadows made to gameplay in vQ4, i'm not so sure we should be so afraid of things we are not used to. On this front i feel brightskins does alter the gameplay, ergo it changes the game from vq4 to something ... modified ..... :icon28:

I feel the need to retract my prior statement that q4max can be made to be like vq4, as even if i could disable my brightskins, other could use at will (i suppose it could become a cvar for league use, then that would be ok, and we're back on track for vq4 emulation again :icon25: )

Hmm waffling i am afraid - put short, atm q4max manages to fix a few problems vq4 has not addressed - once vq4 has caught up the choice will become clearer

I feel much the same. One of my Q4 servers runs Q4Max because of the additional options (hopefully they'll add CPM-style physics soon) but IMO both types of servers are needed.

Thank you so much for the kind words! Hopefully the REAL patch will be out soon so the server can achieve the popularity that I feel it deserves once everyone can auto-download all the maps that's required. :(

Does every Q3 server run OSP?

Excluding the servers running older point releases, and ones set up by fairly clueless admins. Yes, every decent Quake 3 server is running OSP as the stock game right now.

All that shit about red orchestra etc demonstrates that perhaps you don't grasp the nature of OSP/Q3Max.

You're talking to some pretty smart chalk here, cheesebag.

Might want to check the actual numbers on that Foo. OSP is definitely in the majority but there are still a fair number of Deathmatch serversand players. I'd say over 200 servers and over 400 players when OSP only has 500+ shows that not everybody agrees. I "grasp the nature of" your favorite mods quite well but simply disagree that all servers should run it (as many others apparently do as well). A mod isn't a requirement in order to play a game, its an optional addon.

If the server is not running Q4Max then there is not much point in me joining.

The difference between ~15fps and ~50fps can be quite fairly referred to as a "major speed increase".

My PC is a bit behind the times.
Sure, I will upgrade someday, probably when I have to.
Q4, in its current state, is not even close to compelling an upgrade.

Two things that may save Q4:
1) Substantial code upgrade addressing the many issues discussed in this forum.
2) Lots of players start filling up the servers.

Note that item 1 will result in item 2. Also, item 2 will justify working on item 1.
Sort of a loop.

Q4Max is a code upgrade addressing many problems. The result is greater player participation.
