AMD Duron 1.8GHz = $50

40GB HD = $40
128MB GPU = $35
DVD ROM = $20
Case & Power = $30

Monitor = $90
Keyboard = $5
Mouse = $3

Total: $275 for the standalone system, $373 for the complete package. Hot diggity!
They stopped making Duron's years ago. They are Sempron's now.

I remember hearing the same tired complaints when they discussed releasing XP. Funnily enough, people finally got it through their heads that the OS was more than just a new UI and upgraded. IMO Vista will be exactly the same.

Hope Symantec sucessfully delays Vista.

By a show of interhands, how many of you have actually used the Vista beta builds? Especially the last two or three.

Got a few discs of the most recent direct from uni (I think they're getting over-zealous). Not sure which build I used last.

Yeah it won't happen. Symantec bought out Veritas, which means they also aquired Veritas' somewhat undesirable contracts. And thats if MS didn't renew in 2004, which they supposedly did and which would nullify Symantec's argument altogether.

I've briefly tested it and will be doing more extensive testing for our business environment in upcoming months.

Untrue. I hate Windows because of so many annoyances that I encounter when using it for any significant length of time. I vastly prefer to use KDE on Linux. Still, I did used to run XP dual-boot in order to play a bunch of "PC" games that I own. I stopped booting XP and have been Windows-free for over a year now largely because my installation ate itself yet again and I keep putting off the reinstallation. :p

but you're putting off the reinstall, therefore, you're not using the OS.

btw, i dual boot myself, what flavor are you using?

Well, not currently. I intend to use it whenever I get the urge to replay some game(s) that won't run under wine, though.

Debian. :)

Its funny that so many people have no problems whatsoever. Ever thought it might be a lack of skill or knowledge on your own part thats causing your systems issues?

The "annoyances" that I was referring to are features and behaviors that I've come to expect in Linux, KDE, and various FOSS apps that are absent (or craptacular) in Windows. I have tried many times to work around this, but I always end up being unsatisfied.

Case in point: Virtual desktops. I could not find a decent, no-cost implementation for Windows. Of the free ones that I tried, all were inferior in some way.

Yeah, it's possible that I disabled some service that I shouldn't have, or tweaked something that shouldn't have been. I just can't help it when I'm running Windows on my own machines, though -- I'm never happy with it.

Really? and have FULL 3d support without having to edit shit and add drivers all kinds of retarded ways?

of course you need the current driver for graphics cards, but we're not talking about gaming. "fully functional computer" in most people's terms, this does not include playing the latest games but rather being able to surf, check email, chat, and the like.

we're talking about your average user, not a gamer.

Is Vista going to be filled with BSODs and system failures as much as XP?

no shit.. onyl time i get BSODs is when i add some crazy hardware/driver combo that OTHER HARDWARE dont like.. OS is fine.. people are just tools..

Average person does play games.. maybe not "uber high end" but stupid shit that requires SOME 3d usage.. Example, my GFs grandma plays poker, game requres direct x and 3d acceleration..

Point im getting at here, is right now you have to go through fuck all to get proper 3d support right now.. when you can just double click a file and let an installer just take over, THEN its easy enough for bob to use..

yeah, but most (if not all?) of the online poker games are windows only anyway. moot point.
