Is it illegal if they're self portraits from when I was that age?

I had a 20GB drive go dead with some information on it that unfortunately wasn't backed up. I called up the recovery people, and they gave me a quote of in between $800 and $1500 depending on the severity. Ripoff.

For fire damage and really crazy shit, you're looking at $200/GB.
