The 1st time Astro raised the issue he did explain the reasons behind it but after a while he stopped because far to many people started to 'bitch' about the idea. Consequently whenever it was brought up he didn't feel like explaining himself again, which resulting in more 'vitriol'.

MC overall lasted a good number of years and for an independent site of that size that's a pretty damn good record, anyone that runs and pays for their own web site can certainly appreciate that.

[doom, gloom prediction]On a wider note; unless sites like MC get more financial help from the community (donations, ad click, buy the T's, mugs or logo'd mousemats) or some sort of 'sponsorship' thing going on with some hardware vendor I'm afraid we're going to see a lot more of them closing down over the next few years. If you're not already aware of it, the Map-Center forums are getting back into business again. The place is a long way from being dead.

I just checked back through my files and found a big archive of map-center content. Gigs of it, forum posts and all.

Did astro lose the original content or what? I'm not sure I'm gonna keep this around, if someone would want it to go through and pull out info, I'm sure I can compress it down some?

Otherwise it's goin in the bin, so to speak.

Result is a 211Mb zip file for anyone who can provide a place to send it :D

It's just HTM, no images or the like.

Astro has said the DB is ok from the previous incarnation; he saved it to his PC so you can probably ditch that stuff you grabbed.

The new Map-center design looks freaking tight man. But the forums are a bit slow. I don't know if that was the case before because I left a while back.

I don't think community sites will neccesarily need sponsors to keep them up. Look at Doom3world, those chaps seem to be doing fine without it. I think the biggest problem is for sites to survive. Look at the community now, the ID community that is. You got this place, Doom3world and Map-center. Anything else burns out or fades away. Levelsource anyone?

I guess if people for some reason don't hang around, sites eventually die. We, LD, have been struggling for almost a year to secure a spot. I doubt if we'll ever make it though. So the point is, it's not the money, it's people's interest.

Good to see some familiar faces btw! Cheers Shallow, Inition and PJW. H.Reaper, read your pm's man!!!!
