A, Y, A, M, S....Now that doesn't even have 6 letters, and there are no Y's and S's in the musical scales. Sheesh, you can do better than that.

I believe the order of transition between note pitches is
Whole Step
Half Step
Whole Step
Whole Step
Half Step
Whole Step
Whole Step

Meaning, a whole step is moving two frets. Half is moving just one fret over.
Doesn't matter where you play the notes on the guitar. The layout is the same (EADGBE)

Say we start on... the E note (deepest note on the guitar. Open 6th string)
We would play
Open (E) 1
Whole Step- 2nd Fret (F) 2
Half Step - 3rd Fret (G) 3
Whole Step - 5th fret (A) 4
Whole Step - 7th Fret (B) 5
Half Step - 8th Fret (C) 6
Whole Step - 10th Fret (D) 7
and
Whole Step - 12th (E) 1

And we have a basic Minor scale.

It depends on the scale and mode: Major, Minor, harmonics of each, Dorian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, etc.

That isn't really a minor scale, not if you're starting on E. That's E Phyrgian ("HEAVY, E, PHYRGIAN!!"). If you make the F into an F# then it's E minor.

Take lessons, it's the only right way to learn guitar. Sure, there are people who pick up a guitar and have like a natural talent to play it, but afterwards they all start to learn guitar theory anyway because they had no id wtf they are playing.

That's how I was. I'm pretty much completely self-taught, taught myself a lot from books and stuff too, but I'd still strongly recommend getting lessons.

Playing-wise, I own everybody.

I self-taught as well. I bought books and such, and played for about a year before I took lessons. I got to where I was able to punch out some chords and pick a few tunes, so I figured I was progressing. In fact I had plateaued, and didnt even realize it until I took lessons.

This is one of the best guitar resources I know. They have a help section for beginners that covers notes, theory and technique, plus the forums are extremely informative, starting from 'how do I play this phrase' to complex jazz theory questions. I always point people towards it when someone asks for something.

I'm self taught as well, pretty much never had a real formal lesson, and I don't think I'm too bad, I can play a little Satriani and the like, not perfectly, but it doesn't sound like utter shit either. I _might_ have gotten here quicker if I had had lessons twice a week, but maybe my interest would have disappeared by now.

Just do what feels right, which lately seems to apply to more and more to absolutely everything.
