school disconnected my account (virus question)...
So I got a reply. It told me to call the helpline if I wanted to reactive. Ignoring the fact that I already did that, of course. Basically they didn't look at the logs I sent them at all. Fuckers.
So, I called the helpline again and got the same story: "you will be reactivated when you show that you have removed the virus or have reformatted."
I explained that I already did all the scans, there is nothing on my system to remove in the first place.
Them - "Oh, did you send an email explaining that?"
Me - "Yes, and it was ignored. It told me to call you."
Them - "Oh... uh... who did you send it to?"
Me - "You guys."
Them - "Oh... uh... well, I can send a request to have your account reactivated, but if they detect the virus again, you'll be disconnected again."
Me - "Ok, but if there really is no virus, but it's detecting one, how can I stop it from happening? Is there any other reason they might have kicked me?"
Them - "Uh...I'm not really sure. It's just a program that detects virus activity, it doesn't say what program it is."
FFS...
Tomorrow I get to see if they turn my account back on, and if they don't, I get to send my scan logs to someone else. Marvelous.

Without wanting to sound pedantic, but this is why I suggested you just reformat your HD. Helpdesks / abuse departments operate under strict guidelines. You can rest assured relying on the output from some third party tool isn't covered.werldhed wrote:Basically they didn't look at the logs I sent them at all.
I'm avoiding formatting for a couple of reasons: For one, this computer is actually my girlfriend's, so if I can make this as simple for her as possible, I will. Also, it's a Dell, which means it didn't ship with the OS recovery disk, so I'd have to go through the trouble of getting them to send me one.^misantropia^ wrote:Without wanting to sound pedantic, but this is why I suggested you just reformat your HD. I understand what you're saying, but the big problem now is that there isn't a way for me to convince them that I'm bug-free. Even if I had reformatted, I'd still have this trouble of getting them to hook me back up.
