I believe "serious" can refer to something as simple as extended loss of conciousness or memory. It doesn't neccessarily mean loss of cognitive function.
That said, I don't know how serious they're talking about...

Small update: Condition slightly upgraded to "stable" and he's moved out of the ICU...

The frontal lobe is critical for more subtle functions, like personality and ability to make judgements.
