Simply the best side-view shooter out there, and it's free.
The best thing about this one is the multiplayer action.
ya i remember this one - i tried it briefly, but i didn't like the control scheme - i need simple tight controls - not the "turret-like aiming system" where you can control the direction of the bullets independently of the position of the fighter.

ok tried out jets n guns - mouse control sux - it's so laggy - i don't like playing shooters with keyboard controls.

You shoot guns at other people that shoot guns at you. How is it not a shooter?

This is a "Scrolling shooter"
(or as the genre was originally called "shooter" or "shoot'em'up")
the screen scrolls, you control an object that is "a shooter"; in that, it is merely an object that shoots things.
from those screen-shots it looks like that game is some sort of variation of worms. (which is really a variation of scorched earth, which could be called a clone of "gorillas" (which came as a sample game in the first version of quick-basic))

I want something like this
http://www.quake3world.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=28012
had such tight controls with the mouse - so responsive - you could really get into some nice flow states. Was very challenging to finish.
and the graphics are so yummy...

Thats just the screenshots, they don't move. In Soldat you get to move your little guy around the whole map, while running, jumping, and firing your rocket boosters. Basically you have the same mobility in Soldat as you do in any First Person Shooter. Except Soldat is 2D and it is sideways "mario style".
Think; Mario + Quake 3 + Counter Strike = Soldat
just get the game to demonstrate the point (it is 11Mb) you won't regret it.

A side-view first person shooter, in multiplayer and vs. bots.
Does that make it a platform game?
I have no idea.

i think there was a game that was all the rage around here a year or so ago called "atomic tank" or something like that.
was a VERY good side-scrolling shooter game with good graphics, challenge, and all intuitively mouse controlled.

Nah not really a side-scrolling shooter.
Think Tyrian, Swiv, Metroid.
Soldat is kinda in a genre of its own.

A side-view, but in; "first person shooter" 'style'
Like Foo says, Soldat is a genre of its own. Download, pay it, and see.

hm - gorgeous graphics n all - but a bit easy - am already on 9th mission after about 2.5 hours of playing (out of 19 missions)
platypus took me months to finish - you really needed to master the levels...
the bosses on platypus were really really evil! - if you weren't in a flow state you could just forget about it...

Stargunner is worth checking out. Pretty old game made by Apogee (now 3D Realms) and its freeware these days.
Works well with Dosbox, and decent mouse control.

ok am already on last level of heavy weapon atomic tank - not really impressed - i intend to check out some other scrolling shooters (if i can get one of the classics to work nice), but so far, i have to say platypus takes the top spot in terms of challenge.
